Keep in mind that Walgreens' retail sales subsidize some of the overhead costs of their clinic operations (building utilities, wages of pharmacists and cashiers, etc.), so the playing field is not exactly level, but that's OK. It's good for everyone that Walgreens is offering low-cost basic medical services to the poor. It takes some of the burden off the County (and hospital emergency rooms).
ReplyDeleteIt also shows the bureacracy of government. (and probably a private clinic) In Clark County, you go to the desk and then wait and talk MA. Finally, a nurse gives the shot.
ReplyDeleteAt Walgreens, you go to the pharmaist and they give you the shot. Total time, about 5 minutes.
Yes, non-government clinics are just as bad (at least, Group Health Cooperative is). Again, it's good for everyone that Walgreen's is offering these basic services. It shortens the lines in clinics for those needing treatment for more complicated issues. Vaccine delivery is one of the few areas in health care in which there are few barriers to entry (like expensive equipment to purchase) and the opportunity for vigorous competition (since people have the option to go without if the price is too high).
