The GMO golf tournament is gone from Milwaukee. The PGA Tour's 42-year run in Milwaukee is over. The board of directors of Milwaukee Golf Charities Inc. voted Wednesday to dissolve the organization, which had run the Greater Milwaukee Open - later the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee - since 1968.
I have been to the Open several times and I grew up on the Brown Deer course and golfed it about 100 times, so this is disappointing to me. I understand economics- what is the price to sponsor a golf tournament and does it pay off?
All I can say, is there is a PGA golf tournament in Vegas this weekend and it is sponsored by Justin Timberlake. If Justin Timberlake can sponsor a tournament, why can't a celebrity sponsor the GMO? Or possibly some company in Milwaukee. Maybe this is a sign of the economic times in Wisconsin.
The GMO brings in a lot visitors to Milwaukee, starting with the golfers and the television personnel. It's too bad that this is happening. Too bad the governor or any other politician has not stepped in, as well.
