First, when I lived in Wisconsin, I had several Amish friends and knew many Amish families. I love the Amish Culture.
But when you get an 18 year old Amish man who has never drove anything but horse drawn buggy and wagons and you get in a car with a presumed Amish person, based on his name,, it just is not a good idea.
If his passenger was indeed Amish, I know the family already has forgiven the Amish driver. And the father and Amish community are saying to the driver- "See what happens when you go into the English world!"
