From the Las Vegas Sun: The parents of a 2-year-old boy who shot himself in the abdomen with his father’s Metro Police-issued handgun are facing charges of child abuse and neglect with substantial bodily harm after a February incident at the family’s Overton home.
Investigators said Jared and Shawnee Bledsoe allowed their son to be placed in a situation where he “suffered unjustifiable physical harm and mental suffering” when they left a loaded handgun in a nightstand drawer accessible to their son, Jared Benjamin Bledsoe, according to an arrest report released Monday.
Shawnee Bledsoe called 911 at 10:53 p.m. Feb. 6 to report her son had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the abdomen, through the chest and arm, and that he had shot himself with a .45-caliber Wilson Combat handgun that belonged to her husband, a Metro officer. http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/mar/01/metro-officer-wife-face-charges-after-toddler-shoo/
I am not anti-gun, nor am I into guns, never owned one and only fired a rifle and shotgun a couple of times in my life. When I was in the Air Force, I scored the lowest score in our squadron during basic training, scoring 40 points out of 200. I missed the target more times than I hit it. (though proving the adage, a blind squirrel can get a nut once in awhile, I did get one bullseye)
But come on, this is a Metro cop, who has probably seen what a gun can do first hand. The officer and his wife need to be charged and the cop ought to be fired.
Guns themselves are not dangerous, if used properly (like target practice), or in self defense and hunting. But they have to be used properly.
