A punk thug tried to rob a liquor store tonight and he picked the wrong store as the clerk shot the thug. So, far the thug is still alive. But a Metro officer said this, which leaves me scratching my forever balding head: "A juvenile came into the store and attempted to conduct a robbery and he ended up being the victim, because the store clerk ended up shooting him," Metro Lt. W. Graham said.

Umm, no, officer, the thug is not a victim, he is still a criminal. The victim in this is the clerk who shot the thug punk. He will have to live with shooting a person for the rest of his life. The thug will probably recover from his wounds and go on to commit more crimes. The clerk will still have to live with the guilt for shooting a human being.
No, officer, the victim is not the thug punk, the victim is the store clerk who was just doing his job when the thug punk decided to do something very stupid.
This is not a poor choice of words by the officer as in the public eye they need to be careful. If he had said Thug it would have reflected badly on not only himself but Metro Police as a whole. What he said just meant the thug was a victim of a shooting. While the clerk will be let off for defending his property and self defense, the officer has to be careful how things are worded to the press.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that the officer should not say thug but on the hand the kid that tried to rob the place is not a victim either, which is what the cop said.
