The Clark County Fire Department firefighters took one in the chops today as an arbitrator ruled in favor of Clark County in the battle of contracts.
From The Las Vegas Sun: Clark County firefighters will see a 5.5 percent reduction in total wages and benefits after an independent arbitrator selected the county’s contract offer, a move the county estimates will save taxpayers about $7.4 million.
The firefighters' final offer, which wasn't selected by the arbitrator, would have saved $6.1 million, the county said Wednesday. The contract award marks a final step in negotiations that started in February 2010. http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2011/jan/19/arbitrator-backs-county-over-firefighters-union-co/
The firefighters took a gamble by going to arbitration and they lost. For some unknown reason, they thought they would win in a Clark County economy that sucks and has a large budget deficit.
Hopefully this is a sign to other government unions that they have to work with management to get the budget crisis under control.
However, the good thing for the fire union is that they probably will not have any firefighters laid off because of this ruling.
