While reading about the floods in Minot, ND, I looked at the court system to see if they were even having court.
I ran across this case: Negligent homicide - Nicholas Arthur Rouse, 21, 724-6th Ave. SW, Unit 7A, $500 court fee, $25 victim-witness fee, perform gun safety-oriented community service, three years supervised probation, sentence deferred three years, restitution to be determined.

And this case: Forgery - Vincent Marcus Anderson, 32, 406-31st Ave. SE, No. 209, $500 fine, $455 attorney fee, $500 court fee, $25 victim-witness fee, pay $1,282.87 restitution, one year suspended for three years.
Kill someone negilgently, no jail time, pay $525 in fees and be on probabtion.
Then, basically steal $1,282.87 and get a much bigger fee/fine/restiution.
I guess, in Minot North Dakota, a person's life is worth less than $1.282.87.
