From the LVRJ: Five people died in a tour helicopter crash at the Lake Mead National Recreation area, the park service confirmed Wednesday night.
The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on the Nevada side of Lake Mead, Las Vegas police spokesman Bill Cassell said.
The park service said the victims were four passengers and the pilot.
The crash occurred near a water treatment plant near Boulder Beach, a few miles west of Lake Mead, said park spokesman Andrew Munoz. A security guard from Lake Mead National Recreation Area heard the crash and reported seeing smoke about 4 miles west of the lake's edge, Munoz said.
The crash site, about 30 miles from Las Vegas, is not accessible by road.
Ian Gregor, a spokesman with the Federal Aviation Administration, said the aircraft is an AS350 tour helicopter. It was manufactured in 1989, according to the FAA registry. It was on a tour flight from McCarran International Airport to Hoover Dam and back, Gregor said....
According to the park service and the FAA, the aircraft is with Sundance Helicopters, based in Las Vegas. A spokesman for Sundance Helicopters said the helicopter had been giving a local tour when it went missing. He didn't give his name and declined to answer further questions. http://www.lvrj.com/news/helicopter-crashes-at-lake-mead-police-say-135215838.html
The weather was clear and cool but not windy. The crash happened just after the sun set
How sad that you come to Las Vegas to see the sights and sounds and then you go back home in a body bag. God bless their souls and God bless their friends and their families.
