From todays's Las Vegas Sun: Two people were killed Friday afternoon when a small, single-engine
jet crashed just west of Boulder City Airport, authorities said.
According to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor, a
Czech-made Aero Vodochody L39 jet crashed for unknown reasons about a
half mile west of the Boulder City Airport. The plane, built as a
high-performance military trainer, went down in a desert area near a
string of power lines.
Local authorities are reporting that both people aboard the plane
were killed. Boulder City Police Chief Thomas Finn said he could not
confirm the deaths, but he said the occupants were still in the plane
some two hours after the crash.

From a Pawn Star's Review:
In the first episode of Pawn Stars, the the guys went out to a local
airport to see an L39 Albatross fighter jet airplane, It was a Soviet
era airplane. The guy wanted $200,000 for the plane, but Rick needed an
expert, Matt. Matt is a former Blue Angel pilot and Top Gun Graduate.
He looked the plane over and said it looked ok. Rick and Chumlee didn't
want to fly in the plane when given the chance. They took the plane
from I think, the Henderson Airport. They really took the plane on a
nice trip with rolls. Matt thought the plane was worth around $170,000.
To keep the plane, Rick would have to hanger the plane and fly it at
$5000 a pop. The guy wanted $200,000. Rick offered $80,000 and there
was no sale but because of the risk.

Not positive if this is the same jet, but how many of these jets are located in Southern Nevada?
Update: The plane is not the one from Pawn stars. From the Las Vegas Sun:
The two aircraft are believed to have flown in from Southern
California, offering rides to customers wanting to experience
acrobatics and mock-dogfighting exercises, said Josh Jefferson, an
employee at BFE, a fixed base operator at the airport.
The aircraft fly in several times in the spring and early summer
each year, he said. Jefferson said both planes were fueled and the
pilot of the second plane was taking off when he heard the pilot issue
a mayday call.
Strange that the two were killed considering there was just a little fire in the back of the plane, the plane was mostly intact and the plane pancaked down. Quite strange.
Not the same plane. The one that crashed today was blue camo and owned by a guy in Palmdale CA. There are actually quite a few of the L39s around.
ReplyDeleteYep, you're right, the plane that crashed came from CA and a friend borrowed the plane to take people up at the Boulder City airport
DeleteIt is most likely they died from blunt force trauma. Even at low altitude hitting the ground that hard could cause some serious injuries.
DeleteThis is going to be an interesting investigation from a lot of perspectives.
Looking for Matthew last name I would like to contact him to see if he gives rides in jets and what it costs if you could get me his phone number and E-Mail it to me at lamber28@aol.com thank you Larrt Olsen
