The media is going nuts over the heat wave that has hit the Midwest, Mideast and now the East Coast.
Well, guess what, it's summer.
Last year, Texas was sweltering most of the summer in 100 degree days and they are nowhere close to those records this year. So, this year, the jet stream moved and some other areas are getting hot.
Sure, up to 3500 areas set records, but National Weather Service, especially in the East, has their weather gauges every few miles, so, of course, you are going to get a lot of records. Just in the Las Vegas area, we have about 12 or more NWS recording areas. http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mesowest/gmap.php?map=vef So, if the whole Las Vegas area sets a record for heat, it goes down as 12 records, not 1.
So, yes, it is hot, but it is summer out, what do you expect? To be in Barrow Alaska where it is 43 degrees outside? http://www.weather.com/weather/right-now/USAK0025:1
