I haven't noticed this until last week, but Prairie Home Companion starring Garrions Keilor is no longer being aired in Las Vegas or Nevada anymore.
From the LVRJ: For once, the news from Lake Wobegon isn't good: KNPR-FM, 88.9, has stopped airing "A Prairie Home Companion."
Garrison
Keillor's longtime public radio staple left local airwaves earlier this
month, but the reason isn't exactly a case for Guy Noir, Private Eye.
It basically boils down to ratings and money.
" 'Prairie Home' had
seen a fairly slow but steady, very steady, decline in audience for
some years now," says Dave Becker, the station's program director.
"In
terms of rank, it wasn't doing all that well," he adds. Even on the
weekends, "Car Talk," "This American Life," "All Things Considered" and
"Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me!" all have "noticeably more listeners than
'Prairie Home' does."
Part of that could be attributed to "Prairie
Home's" time slot, Becker admits, but, in the end, the show "doesn't
compare well to the real superstars of our weekend."
KNPR had
considered making the move for some time, Becker says, but the station
pulled the trigger only when three new shows became available. http://www.lvrj.com/neon/ratings-finances-spell-end-to-garrison-keillor-in-las-vegas-158605135.html
I used to listen to the show fairly often but since school ended, not as much..
So, it sucked that PHC no longer will on NPR but then then the LVRJ also says that Click and Clack of Car Talk no longe will be on the air and that is my second favorite show on KNPR:
It's the second blow to KNPR listeners in recent days. Brothers Tom and
Ray Magliozzi, better known to listeners as Click and Clack, announced
last week that as of September, they'll stop making new episodes of "Car
Talk." Unlike that hit, "A Prairie Home Companion" will carry on, just
not on valley airwaves.
I listen to 3 shows on KNPR: PHC, Car Talk and sometimes Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me and now 2 out of the three shows are gone. That sucks.
Maybe they are paying me back for not contributing to NPR when they run their viewer guilt trip and try to viewers to pay money to them.
I won't donate to NPR for 2 very simple reasons: 1. They take money from th government and to me, that is wrong. They are competeting against private companies and so they should not be collecting government money to operate. Second reason is that KNPR doen't advertise. They do accept a little advertising before and after some shows but not during their shows. That's nice for the listener but sucks for their bottom line.
KNPR has many good shows on it's station, shows that would attract adveretisers, but because they think they are better than anybody else, they don't take advertising.
Prairie Home Companion is one of those shows that would be able to attract advertisers and bring in a lot of money to KNPR.. If KNPR accepted advertising during PHC, the show would still be on the air here in Las Vegas.
So, I will listen to the show on the Internet and not even bother to listen to KNPR at all.
