From the Reno Gazette Journal: The Washoe County district attorney said Monday that he was
investigating three cases dropped by federal prosecutors in Reno during a
yearlong rift with local agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives.
One of the
defendants whose case was dismissed by the Reno U.S. Attorney’s office
was arrested on new charges this year, a continued Reno Gazette-Journal investigation found.
A
Reno federal prosecutor filed a motion to dismiss Randall Belford’s
firearms charge, brought by ATF agents, claiming a problem with a
witness one week after Assistant U.S. Attorney Sue Fahami told the local
ATF agents that she would not take their cases until unidentified
problems are resolved.
The breakdown between the two Justice Department agencies, first reported last week by the Reno Gazette-Journal,
is the focus of a probe by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. Last week he
gave them until Wednesday to explain what they’ve been doing to resolve
the problems.
ATF
officials contacted Grassley’s office Monday to discuss participating in
a briefing on the rift, but they have yet to set a date and a time,
according to Beth Levine, a spokesman for Grassley who is the ranking
member of the Senate Judiciary Committee which oversees the ATF. No one
from Nevada U.S. Attorney Dan Bogden’s office has contacted the office,
according to Levine.
Grassley said he was concerned about an increase in crime in Reno.
“I
haven’t seen anything to make any final determination on Reno, but it
just makes common sense that when criminals know that they may not be
prosecuted there’s a possibility for increased crime,” Grassley said in
an email. “I hope the U.S. Attorney and the ATF can answer those
questions for me.” http://www.rgj.com/article/20120924/NEWS/309240051/District-attorney-investigates-rejected-Reno-ATF-cases-congressman-afraid-crime-will-increase-due-rift?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE&nclick_check=1
Seems like the right hand has no idea what the left hand is doing in the federal agencies in Reno and no there is a possibility of increased crime in Reno because of these screw ups.
This is Obama's America.
