From the Detroit Free Press: In an attempt to reduce unintended pregnancies that cost the nation
an estimated $11.1 billion a year, the nation's largest group of
obstetricians and gynecologists said Tuesday that oral contraceptives
should be available without a prescription.
The opinion from the
American College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians formalizes its
long-standing position that women should have greater access to birth
control and fueled hopes among those who have long advocated for such a
move.
"Anything that increases access to allow women and couples
and families to make proactive decisions ... is a good thing," said Lori
Lamerand, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Mid and South
Michigan.
Though the pill has side effects for a few, a larger number of women
would avoid unintended pregnancies, according to the opinion, which will
be published in the December issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology....
But others worry that easy access to birth control will increase sexual activity, especially among teens.
Increased
access will "foster promiscuity," said Dr. Joseph DeCook, a retired
Holland obstetrician and executive director of the national American Association of Pro Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
If
women can simply walk into a drugstore for birth control pills, they
may skip regular appointments with gynecologists who screen them for
greater risks from the pill's possible side effects, such as blood
clots, DeCook said. http://www.freep.com/article/20121121/NEWS06/311210115/Ob-gyn-group-Make-the-pill-over-the-counter-cut-unintended-pregnancies?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE
As a conservative and a believer in religious rights, this would be a good thing because these pills then would not be on insurance plans and the women and families would have to pay for the medication out of their own pocket instead of relying on insurance paying for them. And this would take away some talking points by the liberals. Of course, these doofusses still want the pill be available for free, even if it is for sale over the counter.
So, go ahead with putting the pills for sale over the counter. It will save money for those of us who are forced to pay for it and it would eliminate some problems that religious organizations have with ObamaCare.
Go for it.
