From the New York Daily News:
What a bust!
City strip clubs and other sailor-friendly businesses are bracing for limp sales this weekend due to the cancellation of Fleet Week.
“It definitely puts a tremendous damper on business,” groused Sam Zherka, owner of the famed Cheetahs Gentleman’s Club in Times Square.
“The last two years, we’d get hundreds of guys each night frequenting the Cheetah club.”
A Cheetah beauty named Jordan said she’d always count on the large groups of sailors — and their generous tips — in late May.
Not this year.
“What they can’t get out there, they get in here,” said Jordan, 32. “The girls were really disappointed. We were expecting them this year.”
Added 28-year-old Corrine: “They’re out at sea surrounded by men all the time. They really enjoy the company of young girls.”
Federal budget cuts sank the annual Fleet Week celebration for the first time in 30 years, depriving the city of an estimated $20 million in economic activity.
The hotly anticipated event — which costs the Navy up to $10 million — was slated to start May 23.
Instead of raking in cash, bar owners were crying in their suds Saturday over the absence of thousands of military men and women streaming into the city.
This time last year, hordes of crisply dressed sailors and Marines were filling bar stools at pubs like Hurley’s on W. 48th St., often with swarms of single ladies chasing after them.
