Tragic All Away Around
From the New York Daily News:
The bullet that killed a beautiful Hofstra University student — while the terrified woman was being held hostage by an armed gunman — was fired by a Nassau County cop, authorities said Saturday night.
Officials revealed the tragic twist hours after a hulking career criminal who jumped parole three weeks ago was identified as the ski-mask-wearing assailant.
Ex-con Dalton Smith, 30, was using Andrea Rebello, 21, as a human shield and holding her in a headlock Friday night when he pointed his loaded 9-mm. handgun at a cop, authorities said.
“I’m going to kill her,” Smith barked, according to cops.
A veteran Nassau County officer and former NYPD cop fired eight rounds, with seven striking Smith — and one slamming into Rebello’s head.
A quartet of Nassau County police officials, including Commissioner Thomas Daly, showed up at the Rebellos’ Westchester County home late Saturday to deliver the grim news of how the young woman died to her grief-stricken parents.
Rebello’s family members declined to comment afterward. Her twin sister, Jessica — who was among four students being held hostage inside the Uniondale, L.I., home — remained silent and out of sight.
The tragic series of events began with a simple, careless act: a front door left open.
The Rebello sisters, Jessica’s boyfriend and a friend had just returned home when they left the door open so the boyfriend could quickly go outside to move his car and avoid a parking ticket.
Smith, clad in black and wearing a ski mask, saw the open door and burst inside the two-story home at 213 California Ave., Nassau County Detective John Azzata said.

RIP Andrea and prayers to her family and friends and fellow students. And prayers to the police officer who fired the shots that killed her and the thug.
