After years of controversy surrounding its "Indians" nickname and logo, the Mukwonago School Board has voted to draw a line in the sand by ignoring a state order to change its mascot name by Aug. 15.
The district, which faces up to $1,000 in fines per day it is not in compliance with the Department of Public Instruction order, plans to lobby the Legislature to repeal the 2009 law that allows DPI to oversee hearings when a complaint about such mascots is brought forward.
Legislation would repeal the 2009 law was announced Tuesday.
Mukwonago's decision drew criticism Tuesday from tribal groups.
"It's too bad, I wish the school would look at it differently," said Mike Allen, the executive director of the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, which represents 11 federally recognized tribes in Wisconsin. "These nicknames and logos are inappropriate and contribute to stereotypes and an improper understanding of Indian history and culture."
Tribal council officials have publicly called for the end to Indian-related nicknames and logos across the state in recent years. The 2009 law gave DPI officials broad power over uses of Indian-related mascots by granting the department authority to oversee the process that would mandate name changes if one complaint was brought forward in a district.
Mukwonago School District Attorney Samuel Hall said the district is opposing the law because it puts districts through "sham" proceedings that he likened to "a kangaroo court." http://www.jsonline.com/news/education/mukwonago-schools-refuse-to-heed-order-to-change-indian-nickname-b9960165z1-216663611.html
This is just political correctness run amok. Numerous sports teams are named after Indians, drunk Irish men, the Greeks, factory workers, criminals (Vandals) etc.
This is just an opportunity for liberals to feel good about themselves because they think they are protecting the poor downtrodden Indians.
Maybe they ought to consider renaming my high school's name. Oconomowoc, WI. nickname is "Cooney", named after raccoons. When I went to school there, we were given gym bags that stated: "Home of the Coons".
I'm surprised Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton haven't held protest there.
