From the San Fran Chronicle: Niners starting cornerback Tarell Brown unwittingly forfeited a $2 million
escalator in his base salary in 2013 because he didn’t participate in the team’s
voluntary offseason workout program.
Brown, 28, who wasn’t aware of the escalator clause in his contract, fired
his agent, Brian Overstreet, today shortly after he learned that his base salary
had dipped from $2.925 million to $925,000 in 2013. Brown said he heard about
his slashed base salary on Twitter. The story was first reported by Yahoo!
Sports.
“That’s what agents get paid to do – to orchestrate the contract and let you
know what you can and can’t do as far as workouts, OTAs, things of that sort,”
Brown said. “That’s what he got paid to do. He didn’t do that. So, in my
opinion, you have to be let go. We all are held accountable for our actions and
it’s just part of the business.”
Brown, a six-year veteran who is entering the final year of his contract,
said Overstreet spoke to the 49ers today to see “what we could work out” as far
as recouping some of his lost salary. Brown said he would “hope for the best”
before adding, “Pray for me.” He signed a three-year, $7.125 million extension
in 2009. http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/2013/07/25/cb-brown-fires-agent-after-forfeiting-2-million-in-base-salary/
While the agent should have kept Brown notified about the contract, Brown is also a high school graduate and went to college at the University of Texas, so he is not all that stupid that he cannot read a simple contract.
I also am sure he got a copy of the contract.
So, yes the agent screwed up but so did Brown and he needs to man up and admit he was the one who made the biggest mistake.
And would it have hurt him so bad that he needed to skip the voluntary practices? That's not being very professional.
