From the Detroit News: Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn said today the automaker plans to build a midsize SUV in North America to go on sale in 2016.
The company will invest $7 billion in North America over the next five years in its quest to sell more than 1 million Volkswagen and Audi vehicles in the U.S. by 2018.
Winterkorn would not say where the SUV would be built, but its plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., is under consideration.
VW makes the Passat sedan in Chattanooga, where the UAW has been working to organize about 2,000 workers. Management has said it would not stand in the way of a union vote.
Tonight Winterkorn said the decision on where to make the SUV is not related to whether or not the Tennessee plant becomes unionized.
“It’s one plant on the list,” Winterkorn said. http://www.freep.com/article/20140112/BUSINESS03/301120161/Volkswagen-invest-7-billion-North-America-might-build-new-midsize-SUV-Tennessee
It's too bad that Volkswagon is not going to Michigan, because they could use the jobs, because Michigan is now a right to work state.
But I also notice that Volkswagon is going to a liberal hell hole either.
