A Salt River police officer died Saturday morning after he was shot during a traffic stop.
Salt River police spokesman Detective Vicente Cendejas said the death of Jair Cabrera marks the first time that an officer in the community's police department was killed in the line of duty.
Cendejas said Cabrera stopped a vehicle around 3 a.m. on the Salt River Reservation near Chaparral and Pima roads, along the border with Scottsdale.
Cabrera made contact with the three people in the car, but one them got out and fired, striking the officer, Special Agent Perryn Collier of the FBI said.
Two people from the vehicle fled on foot, Collier said.
Officers were able to take two people in custody Saturday morning, Collier said. They are currently looking for the third person involved as a witness to the shooting.
The officer was taken to a hospital, where he died of his wounds. http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/scottsdale/2014/05/24/arizona-salt-river-officer-shot-traffic-stop-scottsdale-abrk/9534125/
