California shows that they are a bunch of idiots.
From the NY daily News:
A California jury accidentally signed a "not guilty" form and let a career criminal go free an hour before he was murdered.
The body of Bobby Lee Pearson, 37, was found at about 1 a.m. on a street outside his mother's home in Fresno, his first stop after spending a year in jail.
Pearson had been on trial for charges of burglary. He and co-defendant Terrel Minnieweather, 31, broke into a Fresno home and stole a video game console and gun.
The Fresno County Superior Court jury convicted Minnieweather.
As for Pearson, they were apparently confused on how to proceed if they couldn’t agree unanimously, and signed forms declaring Pearson not guilty even though they were actually split 8-4 in favor of a conviction, reported the Fresno Bee.
Their misunderstanding led to Pearson's release from the Fresno County Jail at 11:57 p.m. Wednesday.
When the jurors turned in Pearson’s verdict, even Judge W. Kent Hamlin questioned the decision, especially since Pearson had several felony convictions for firearms.
It wasn't until after the verdict went into the record that jurors revealed to Hamlin they had no idea which of the forms to sign in case of deadlock.

This is why defense attorneys want the stupid on juries.
But then there is this:
The mistake ultimately led to Pearson's death.
He had stopped by his mother’s house to grab his belongings, but got into an argument with her boyfriend, Lt. Joe Gomez told the Fresno Bee.
The men had an ongoing disagreement and took their fight to the street, where a commotion and a “loud pop” brought his sister, Lasandra Jackson, 35, outside.
She saw the suspect flee and Pearson bleeding on the ground with what appeared to be a knife and gunshot wound, according to KFSN-TV.
She then called 911 to report her brother’s attack, but he died minutes later at a hospital.
Karma, sweet karma.
