And you think you are in great shape.
From the Pahrump Valley Times (who now has a very good editor):
After a year hiatus, the baddest race on the planet, the AdventureCORPS Badwater Ultramarathon, returns to its home and original course in Death Valley, California.
Last year Death Valley National Park conducted a safety review and shut down most of the events at Death Valley National Park and so the Badwater Ultramarathon was run outside the park.
The race will start on July 28 and is truly a challenge of both body and mind. It starts in Badwater, the lowest point in California, at 280 feet below sea level and finishes 135 miles and two days later terminating at Mt. Whitney Portal, which is at 8,300 feet above sea level.
The course covers three mountain ranges for a total of 13,000 feet of cumulative vertical ascent and 4,700 feet of cumulative descent. The Whitney Portal is the trailhead to the Mt. Whitney summit, which is the highest point in the continental United States....
If you run track or just jog to keep in shape, you can appreciate these athletes who voluntarily run in these harsh conditions. They get little to no sleep in the 48 hours and certainly don’t eat a regular meal while running. Most consume liquid diets during the race.
One runner claims he really doesn’t have to sleep and sleeps while he runs, while others sleep as little as 30 minutes. http://pvtimes.com/sports/adventurecorps-badwater-race-returns-death-valley.html
It's very cool this time of year for Death Valley, that is. In the next 10 days, the average temperature will be about 110, which is almost Winter like for Death Valley at this time of year. Usually, Death Valley is around 117 degrees or more at this time of year.
