Bart Starr And Brett Favre At Green Bay Game
From jsonline: As he headed up to his suite at Lambeau Field after halftime Thursday night, Brett Favre watched on a television in the elevator as Aaron Rodgers writhed in pain after being tackled on a fumble recovery.
"Give me five minutes to loosen up," Favre said with that impish grin Packers fans came to know and love.
He exited the elevator and the doors closed behind him. Back to the warmth of his suite, then back to his unhurried life in Mississippi. There will be no more on-field heroics for Favre, now 46 and wearing a beard that matched the color of his gray sweat shirt.
But there will be memories, the kind that warm your heart, even on a cold, dreary, altogether miserable night at Lambeau, even when the Chicago Bears are walking off the sodden turf with a 17-13 victory.
Favre gave us one more of those Thursday, when his name and retired No. 4 were unveiled during a halftime ceremony made complete by the presence of 81-year-old Bart Starr. The crowd roared when Favre emerged from the tunnel, but the sustained ovation when Starr and his wife, Cherry, were driven to the middle of the field in a cart was even louder.
The sight of Favre and his wife, Deanna, hugging Bart and Cherry has to rank among the top lump-in-the-throat moments in Lambeau Field's storied history. The quarterbacks, 35 years apart in age but joined at the hip as icons, combined for 254 victories and 594 touchdown passes in Packers uniforms — Starr the ultimate field general, Favre the ultimate gamer.
This was undoubtedly Starr's final trip to Green Bay. He suffered two strokes, a heart attack and multiple seizures 14 months ago and nearly died, and a big part of his recovery was the focus on his return to Lambeau Field to help honor Favre.
"Obviously, time is not on his side but Bart Jr. and Cherry and their entire family was determined to get Bart back here," Favre said. "And I think it was the right way to do it. I wanted to include him in this atmosphere.
"It's more than likely his last time to be here. It's sad, but I really wanted him to be here. His family wanted him to be here. I think it was a special way to send him off. He's an amazing guy, had an amazing career here, (is) an icon for so many." http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/355338641.html
