And Now Come The CCSD Layoffs

From the LVRJ:  Class sizes will increase and more than 1,000 teachers will be laid off if the Clark County School Board adopts its proposed budget tonight.
The School District must cut $60 million in spending. Officials had planned on saving that money by freezing teacher pay. But the Clark County Education Association, the teacher's union, fought that plan. An arbitrator ruled in the union's favor.
As a result, according to a memo sent out Wednesday, 1,015 teacher positions will be eliminated. This will result in classes increasing by about two or three students each.
The School Board is scheduled to vote on the proposed budget, including the layoffs, at a 5 p.m. meeting tonight.
The Board is expected to adopt the $2.062 billion budget for 2012-13.
The district is expecting $27.6 million less in revenue than this school year and must, for the third year, tap its emergency reserve, taking out $20 million to cover teacher raises, which leaves just $40 million.

Will there be 1015 layoffs?  No, because there will be numerous resignations and retirements and that will cover many of the layoffs.  Will there be some layoff's? Probably a few in some positions the District just doesn't want any more.  For instance, librarians will be laid, I predict.  The District's view is that each school does not need a full time librarian.  The district is happy with library aides who may be supervised by a librarian who travels between schools.
Here is a hint for each person who is going or planning on being a teacher.  While you may like a job being a gym teacher, the chances of you being hired as a gym teacher or music teacher or history teacher unless you have a teaching certificate in special education, science or math.  Right now, you are just not employable if you are not certified in one of these three areas.
Anyways, there is going to be a battle in the media between the union and the superintendent and they will play a game of chicken.  But neither side wants to be the blamed for laying off over 1000 teachers, so in the end, most teachers teaching today will be teaching in the classroom and somewhere the union and the District will find the money to do so.  On area of increased money will be the increase in revenue from sales taxes, which has risen in recent months.
So, today and the next week or so, the union and District will engage in a pissing contest but then they will get down to business.
