Tonight, while out to eat at a local casino, I saw a very scary moment at the Minnesota Twins- Cincinnati Reds game.
From ESPN: HOME PLATE UMPIRE JERRY LAYNE LEFT THE GAME IN THE BOTTOM OF THE FOURTH
INNING AFTER BEING HIT BY A BROKEN BAT. BOB DAVIDSON MOVED FROM SECOND
BASE TO HOME PLATE.

The batter, who I don't remember but I think he was from the Reds, took a very hard swing and fouled the ball off. While he was swinging, the bat broke and the broken piece, the barrel of the bat, continued going in back of the batter and catcher and hit the umpire squared in the side of the face and his mask did not offer much protection. The umpire, Layne, went straight down and laid on his stomach for several minutes and in obvious pain. He eventually got up with help and was escorted off the field.
Hopefully, there will be a video on the play to show how dangerous it can be to be an umpire.
