From the Wausau Daily Herald: President Barack Obama's call Tuesday to improve background checks on private firearms sales stoked the flames of fear for many gun owners, and central Wisconsin weapons retailers are profiting as a result.
"(My store) was full at noon, and the buzz was all about the (president's) executive order," said Fred Prehn, owner of Central Wisconsin Firearms in Wausau....
Gun shop owners across the region have come to expect sales to jump whenever firearms-related violence or the threat of political action against guns ends up in the national spotlight.
Prehn stopped by his shop Tuesday, "curious" about people who were invariably shopping for guns after Obama's nationally televised speech had ended. He might sell a gun or two on a typical day, but by 2 p.m. Tuesday, Prehn said the store had already sold 10.
"People are arming themselves in central Wisconsin," Prehn said.
Sales have been increasing for Prehn in the last four or five years. He said 70 percent of his sales are from handgun purchases, and this past December was the best month he's had in a year and half.
At Ray's Gun Shop in Wisconsin Rapids, owner Ray Gwinn's distributors are running a week behind in getting guns to their respective places because the larger stores — not so much his own, he said — can't keep up with the amount of guns people are buying.
Prehn and Gwinn credit the rise in purchases to fear: the fear that people eventually will lose their Second Amendment rights to keep firearms and the fear that they will be unprotected by the government in a violent situation.
Gwinn put it simply: "People think the government is going to try and take their guns." http://www.wausaudailyherald.com/story/news/local/2016/01/06/wdh-guns-sales-up-in-central-wi/78316624/
I'm sure this is happening all over the country.
And the gun makers/sellers are saying "THANK YOU PRESIDENT OBAMA, WE LOVE YOU!!!!"
