New Domed Stadium For UNLV?

UNLV has let slip out that it wants to build a domed football around the UNLV campus, close to the Thomas and Mack Center.
From the LVRJ: A proposed new 40,000-seat domed football stadium at UNLV would sit between the Thomas & Mack Center on campus and Paradise Road, said James Dean Leavitt, chairman of the higher education system's Board of Regents.
If it is ever built, the stadium complex would include a hotel, campus housing, restaurants and retail space, he said. A portion of Swenson Street would be removed under the proposal, he said.
"It will eventually develop into a town square concept," Leavitt said.
Craig Cavileer, one of the developers behind the project, confirmed what Leavitt said. But Cavileer said he was not ready to release more details yet. He said he expected to hold a formal news briefing next week.

Apparently the guys pushing for the stadium are tone deaf or not very bright.
In a time when there is a huge budget deficit in the state budget and UNLV's budget is going to be slashed some more and they are going to ask for a $100,000,000+ domed stadium.
Maybe if UNLV wins more than 4 football games in a season, the proposal could be taken more seriously.
Further, it's not going to add very more events to Las Vegas. If a domed stadium is built, it will take events currently at UNLV - Sam Boyd Stadium or UNLV's arena, the Thomas and Mack - or it will take away business from the private business, like the casinos.
So, if UNLV wants to build a domed stadium, no state funds can be used. No student money can be used. It has to be 100% paid for by donations and it has to be self sustaining. If it is not, then the stadium cannot be built.
