Teacher unions have basically gone on strike in several Wisconsin School Districts. Madison, WI. school district was shut down today, Wednesday, as 40% called in sick to participate in a protest in Madison.
Now, at least 15 school districts just in the Madison area will be closed for students on Thursday because of an illegal a strike: http://www.wkow.com/global/category.asp?c=135641
Apparently, this shows that teachers in these school districts really aren't for the children but instead of their fat paychecks and benefits.
I am embarrassed to say I used to teach in Wisconsin in Milwaukee and Westfield and student taught in Madison and I had to be a member of the union- no choice, though those schools are still open. WEAC, the state teacher's union is an embarrassment to professional teachers. Those teachers calling in sick and going to the protest are not professionals but nothing but union goons who have no interest in teaching.
But's it's for the children, they union goons say. Umm, no. I hope you teacher thugs get fired and replaced. There are many teachers looking for jobs throughout the country, You are replaceable.

If u really taught in wi u would know the paychecks are FAR from fat and you would think, of all people, those who teach our children deserve basic medical benefits.
ReplyDeleteOh, puleeze, mir. No, the paychecks are not the greatest in WI. which is one reason why moved to Vegas. the base salary was the same but because of taxes- income and social security, i am making more in take home pay.
ReplyDeleteBut you lose instant creditability when you bring up basic medical care. The WEA insurance is the Rolls Royce of medical insurance and you pay very little if anything for the insurance. Further, there is very, very little out of pocket expenses, and you know that. Same if you taught in MPS. So, cut the bull about medical insurance.
Wisconsin arguably has the best schools in the country. Look at the non-union states, mostly in the South, and they have crappy schools. But somehow busting the union is supposed to improve educatoion.
ReplyDeleteThank you John for commenting. This was never about improving education, it is a move to shore up a $3 billion short fall. Would you rather have layoffs? Where a bunch of people are severely hurt or spread around some minor hurt to everyone?
ReplyDeleteBut actually, getting rid of work rules that hinder education or running a department will help education if it means you can easlily fire poor workers.
If the unions want to bring in the big guns from outside of the state and charge that it's an attempt at 'union busting', then I say bring it on! It's time for unions to go away. They are no longer needed, and are nothing more than power grabs. Time to bust ALL of them!
