I am reposting this post I made on June 10, 2011 regarding Father Kevin McAuiliff being placed on leave at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton church in Summerlin.
The reason for the repost is that some of the comments are getting interesting about what might be happening. The posts maybe vicious rumours or they could be close to the truth.
The rumour is that Father Kevin may have done some Internet betting or worse. Others, on the other hand, defend Father Kevin and says he didn't do anything wrong.
My feeling is that, having gone to that Church for 2 years, is that is is a difficult place to be a priest at because of the money the parishioners have. It has to be one of the richest, parishioner wise, Catholic churches in the country. The Church has had some celebrities there along with some of the richest Las Vegans. The Church and the area it serves has also been hit hard by the recession and foreclosure crisis. It's also hard to preach humility when people come to church in $100,000 cars. But there are also parishioners who are middle class or poor as well.
Bottom line, though, is there is a lot of money, from different sources, that come into the Church and I am sure it is difficult to keep track of all of it. And it could just be bad bookkeeping or worse.
I am also concerned that there has not been anything coming out in over a month. You would think the Las Vegas Diocese and Father Kevin would want to clear this up as soon as possible.
But priests are not perfect. Just last year, a priest in Watertown, WI. was sent to jail for 9 months for fleecing his flock out of hundred's of thousands of dollars because he was duped by a guy in Nigeria. http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/crime_and_courts/article_d7882232-025d-11e0-86cd-001cc4c03286.html
So, what happened, I don't know. Father Kevin is still listed as priest at the Church and is innocent until proven guilty.
