Clark County Fire Dept. Lies, Stupidity

From the Las Vegas Sun: In the wake of an apartment fire that displaced about 50 people and left three badly burned, the Clark County Fire Department is asking valley residents to turn in any of their unused fireworks for safe disposal.
Fireworks are believed to be the cause of a Thursday night fire at the Sonoma Shadows apartment complex, 1550 Karen Ave., near Maryland Parkway and Sahara Avenue, said Fire Chief Bertral Washington. The fire caused an estimated $1.5 million in damage and sent four people to the hospital, including a firefighter.
A preliminary investigation shows the fire started outside one of the two apartment buildings before spreading to a barbeque propane tank, which caused the fire to grow and quickly engulf both buildings, officials said....
 “If in fact fireworks caused this fire yesterday, this will be one of the most costly and largest fires as a result of fireworks that our department has seen in the recent past,” he said. “It serves as a costly reminder to us of just how dangerous fireworks can be.”
Possession of fireworks after July 4 is illegal, and the department is asking residents to turn in any unused fireworks, “no questions asked,” Washington said.

So, you have a fire that the fire department doesn't know how it started and they use this excuse to "ask" you to turn in your fireworks to them, but if you don't they are illegal to have.  Umm, no, it is not illegal to possess fireworks after the 4th of July, it is illegal to shoot them off.  I have fireworks at our home and I'll be damned if I am going to get rid of them or turn them into the fire department.
But the CCFD is using a scare tactic when they don't even know all the facts.  How do we know it wasn't a match or cigarette butt that started the fire?  How about arson?  And if it was a firework that caused the fire, unless the firework malfunctioned, the problem was with the person who shot off the fireworks so close to a building.  Go after them, not the fireworks and stop using threats.
Finally, how did a small fire make a propane tank explode or spring a leak?  Even if you fire a Roman Candle at a propane tank, that should not make the propane tank explode or spring a leak.
So, the CCFD is using stupidity and lies to threaten people who use or have fireworks to make a point and to confiscate legal fireworks.
