Life in Obamaville: A 15-year-old boy is accused of shooting his friend, also 15, for refusing to join a gang, prosecutors said.
River Williams is charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. Late last November, he and his friend were playing video games at Williams' home when Williams asked him if he wanted to go to 45th Street and Marshfield Avenue, prosecutors said.
Williams' father drove the teens there, and they met up with a group and walked to a nearby park. One of the people in the group handed Williams something and he placed it on his waistline and pulled his shirt over it, prosecutors said.
While walking, Williams asked his friend if he wanted to be in a gang and the teen said no. He asked him again and pulled out a gun, and the teen froze and did not answer, prosecutors said.
Williams then said, "I'm gonna do what I have to do, it's over for you," then fired several times at his friend, striking him six times, prosecutors said. Williams and the group fled, and the victim was able to walk to a gas station for help.
The victim identified Williams as the shooter. Prosecutors said Williams also told a family member he had shot someone.
Williams has a juvenile record for robbery and aggravated robbery from last year.
