Sen. John Ensign is a creep. His family is creepy because of his sex scandal. But should he resign because of his sex scandal?
The answer is no and these reasons: Larry Craig, Ted Kennedy, Charlie Rangle, Robert Byrd, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barbara Boxer, Roland Burris and more.
I think Ensign should not run for re-election but while he is scum, he should not resign. What he has done does not equate the total amount of ethical violations mentioned above.
Just don't run for re-election.

You left out Dave Vitter, Newt Gingrich and Mark Foley!
ReplyDeleteTrue and I think you can find things about half the congress.
ReplyDeleteIt is quite likely that Ensign broke the law and will eventually be indicted and forced to resign. Why not go now and spare Nevada further embarrassment? Haven't we had enough with our Governor and Lt. Governor?
ReplyDeleteEnsign's allowed his private life, which is his own business, to contaminate the performance of his public duties. After seducing a campaign staffer married to his long-time friend and Senate staffer, and after his parents paid off the couple to the tune of about $100K, he used his influence to get the husband a job as a lobbyist and then broke the law by meeting with the new lobbyist in broad daylight in the Senate dining room together with the new lobbyist's new client, Allegiant Air, and arranged for AA to meet with the Secretary of Transportation.
This is all contrary to law, which prohibits former staffers from lobbying their former employers, and the employers from being lobbied by the former staffers, for one year after the staffer leaves the Senate.
And of course this is just what's known. Who knows what isn't known?
This shows incredibly poor judgment on Ensign's part from beginning to end. Yet he persists in representing us. Would he be elected today? Of course not. He should get out and go hide somewhere. As should anyone else with similar problems. Otherwise we're allowing guys like this to set the bar for public service pretty low.
Nevadans should pressure Ensign to leave.
