Walt Ruffles Announces His Retirement

Clark County school superintendent announced that he is retiring in August. From the LV Sun: "Clark County Schools Superintendent Walt Rulffes announced tonight he will retire in August, after five years at the helm of the nation’s fifth-largest district.
The announcement, which follows several months of speculation as his contract is up for renewal in August, came near the close of the Clark County School Board’s regular meeting.
“Life is short and it’s getting late,” said Rulffes, who has been with the district 13 years. “Intellectually I believe this is the right thing to do. Emotionally it’s going to be very difficult to give up a job I love.”
Rulffes said he wanted to give the School Board sufficient time to launch a search for his replacement. His contract calls for 90 days notice of resignation."
I can understand why he wants to resign- the CCSD is being gutted because of budget cuts. He is going to resign in August, just when most schools open for the school year, so he won't have to deal with the budget problems and it's aftermath. And the next school year, the District will lose even more more.
I think Ruffles, overall, has done a good job but there are layers of bureaucracy in the district thatr waste money. Being a superintendent of a large school district is extremely difficult, given the different philosophies on how to teach students, the politics involved and the budget mess.
So, good luck, Dr. Ruffles and happy retirement. I certainly hope the school district hires someone has much better qualifications of the new superintendent of the Milwaukee Public Schools.
