Another Reason Why CCSD Is Broke

On May 25, 2010, CCSD will be bringing former Atlanta mayor and U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young for a speech to CCSD employees.

I am sure Andrew Young will give a good speech. He is history and knowledgeable about the civil rights movement. He offers good insight as to what is happening now.
So, since Young is probably not talking for free, he will receive his expenses paid plus whatever he charges for the speech. I don't know what he charges, but I am pretty sure total costs will cost more than $10,000 or more.
Is it a wise move to bring in Ambassador Young when the school district is broke. Probably not.
However the kicker is this: "

If you are a teacher and you attend this speech, you will be paid between $22 and $30 an hour to listen to Ambassador Young.
I am sure Young is a great speaker but do you need to be paid to listen to him? If 200 teachers come and listen to him for two hours, that will cost the district about $8800, in addition to all the other costs.
When times are good, I have no problem bringing in Andrew Young and let him speak. But if you have to pay teachers to listen to him, this probably is not a good idea at this time.
