From the San Fran Chronicle:
Martinez Democrat George Miller opened a campaign Friday with minority leader
Nancy Pelosi to try to get Republican rank-and-file to join them in reopening
the government.
The plan is to get 218 signatures on a “discharge
petition” to force a bill to fund the government to the House floor,
bypassing House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, as permitted under House
rules.
It’s a long-shot bid to get Republicans to openly rebel against their
leaders. The Democrats
said they’ve already handed Republicans a
win by agreeing to $986 billion in spending, representing the 10 percent cut
in domestic appropriations under the sequester....
Miller told us that many Republicans, in private conversations with himself
and other Democrats, have indicated they are looking for a way out.
“We’ve all compared notes with people, we talk with and back and forth, and
yes, there’s clearly a sufficient number (of Republicans) to do this,” Miller
said. “They’ve said they’re not happy with what’s going on here.”
Republicans are privately searching for an exit strategy, he said, telling
him and other Democrats, “We could try this, or we could try this.” http://blog.sfgate.com/nov05election/2013/10/04/george-miller-republicans-searching-for-an-exit/
I admit, the GOP would be the ones who would snatch victory from defeat and cave in.
But the democrats know they are losing and that is why they are trying to put out stories like this. The truth is that the democrats are the one's panicking and looking for a way out. They overplayed their hands and now they look like the bully in the room who want to deny healthcare to kids with cancer, harassing WWII veterans, threatening priests with arrest, closing parks etc.
But again, if the GOP follows history, they will probably figure out to take a victory and turn it into a defeat.
