So, Why Is This A Hate Crime?

From the Clarion Ledger: The FBI now will determine whether McMillian’s murder also rises to the level of a hate crime.
McMillian was one of the first openly gay candidates to run for office in Mississippi, according to the Victory Fund, a national organization that supports homosexual candidates.
On Feb. 27, his body was found naked, bruised, swollen and burned near the Mississippi River just west of Clarksdale. The next day, the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Department charged 22-year-old Lawrence Reed with murder.
Although a motive hasn’t officially been disclosed, those close to the investigation say it appears to have been triggered when McMillian allegedly made unwanted sexual advances toward Reed. Other theories also exist, including that the death might have been politically motivated.  http://www.clarionledger.com/article/20130307/NEWS01/303070050/FBI-see-hate-crime-pertains-slaying-Clarksdale-mayoral-candidate?nclick_check=1
The beginning of the story talks about hate crimes, but if the gay mayoral candidate made unwanted sexual advances toward the suspect, maybe they ought to investigate the candidate for the hate crime, not the other way around.
