Why We Will Be A Welfare State For A Long Time

Nevada Food Stamp Card
I never realized how much of a welfare state we are in.
Just about 4 months ago, I started a second job, at Wal-Mart as a cashier in a fairly well to do area in the Henderson area.  Very few Section 8 housing, a few apartments, but mostly in the are single family homes.
One thing I have noticed is the huge number of people on food stamps and/or WIC (Women Infant and Children)
I am willing to bet that 20-25% of the customers use government funds to pay for their food.  It doesn't matter the race, age or gender of the person.  I have had young kids use food stamps to the elderly women and men, but most for the elderly, it's the women.
I have seen these people buy steaks, expensive fish, and other fine food.  There are a few people who try and save the money they are given, most don't really care what they buy.
The people using WIC seem to be the worst in arguing about what is covered.  These people know what is covered and what is covered but many try and buy things that are not approved.
But the reason the welfare state isn't going anywhere is because it is big business for food stores like Wal-Mart, Food For Less and other grocery stores in the country.  It is also a big business for suppliers and the manufactures of the food products and going all the way down to the farmers.
As a person who has to work 2 jobs to survive, it is frustrating that a person will get free food and then pull out a $100 bill to pay for their smokes and booze.
Finally, on the receipts, you can see how much is left for the customer's food stamps.  A lot of people get a lot of money for food- hundreds and hundreds and up to a thousand dollars of food, provided by the tax payers.
Yep, we are a welfare state and will be one for a long, long time.
