Some Knucklehead Wants To Burn A Koran, So What?

Some knucklehead preacher in Florida says he is going to burn some Korans on 9/11 and the world is acting like this the thing that starts WWIII.
First, this person has about 50 members in his church. 50 people. There are more people in a Salvation Army church service than this Church.
All this guy is doing is getting his 15 minutes of fame and the news media are all shrieking about, thus enabling him.
If the media and government officials never got involved, who would have known?
And of course, we have the over reaction. It's going to upset the Taliban and Muslim extremists. They are going to kill troops. So what. They're pissed off anyways. They have always been pissed off and they will always be pissed off. That's how they get money, recognition and members They are like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton. Those two are always pissed off because it gets them money, recognition and followers.
As far as killing the troops, the Muslims are killing the troops now. You mean they may kill more troops? As opposed to now?
And of course, when was the last time people got pissed when someone burned a Bible? Did the White House get involved? Did a general get involved? Did the Vatican even get involved? When the Family Guy insults Christianity on a regular basis, is there anybody in government involved complaining about that? Of course not, free speech. And of course, no Christian went out and killed people for it.
It was amusing listening to Heidi Harris and Alan Stock, two Las Vegas right wing talkers, try to take the high road in this matter. Saint's Heidi and Alan were doing their level best to take the upside in this, like they think Muslims are going to go after them if they don't act like saints.
So, let the bozo burn the Koran and let the Muslims be pissed- it doesn't matter- it's in their DNA to be pissed. To the media, just don't show the event and no one will know. But it's ratings, baby.
I'll be more sympathetic to Muslims and the Koran when they stand up for the Bible next time the Bible is burned or denigrated. Other than that, I couldn't are less.

  1. I don't think it's safe to say that "nobody would have known" if the MSM wasn't covering this. This preacher guy seems vaguely psycho, along the lines of Rev. Phred Phelps. He's stoking this fire (pun intended). Via the internet--if nothing else--this would have found its way to the intended target. And then the MSM and the politicians would have had to react after the fact.

The comparison between the so-called "Ground Zero Mosque" and burning Korans bothing being constitutionally protected is true, but not quite on the same scale. If the shoe were on the other foot, and some wack-a-doodle Muslim congregation was making a big stink about an "International Burn a Bible Day," the reaction would be instantaneous and fierce.

People are guessing and supposing that the Park 51 communitity center is some kind of political statement. But BURNING BOOKS--any books--is DEFINITELY a political statement. Can you think of any book burning ever in history that is looked back upon as a GOOD thing? Ever?

I think that attention paid to this ridiculous event can be counterproductive, but it is also in a sense necessary. This crazy preacher is deliberately trying to provoke a reaction by the (also) crazy radical Islamic people. It is important that there be a strong message of dissent and castigation over the event. If we all ignored it, our silence could equal consent or even agreement.

  2. I agree with you had to say. The only difference would be I don't think that if there was a Bible burning day, while peple would be pissed, they wouldn't kill people over it.
I like your comparison to Phred Phelps, and I think you are correct- both are crazy.
My guess is that he doesn't go through with it.
