From the Detroit Free Press: Given John Philip Sousa’s feeling that “The Victors” was the best college fight song going, maybe it’s no surprise that more University of Michigan grads play in the band Sousa used to direct — that’d be the U.S. Marine Band — than just about any other school around....
As is typical for Independence Day, the Marine Band will be playing at the White House today, starting with a concert ensemble performing patriotic standards and show tunes from a balcony overlooking the South Lawn before a drum major leads a group in “Semper Fidelis” and other military medleys. So, the White House cancels tours, the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds are cancelled but Obama gets to keep his band.
