From Fox News:
George Zimmerman has been acquitted of all charges in the February 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla.
The jury of six women informed Judge Debra Nelson shortly before 10 p.m. local time Saturday that they had reached a verdict after deliberating for approximately 15 hours over two days.
Zimmerman, 29, blinked and barely smiled when the verdict was announced. After hearing the verdict, Judge Nelson told Zimmerman he was free to go.
"We're ecstatic with the results," defense attorney Mark O'Mara said after the verdict. "George Zimmerman was never guilty of anything except protecting himself in self-defense."
Another member of his defense team, Don West, said: "I'm glad this jury kept this tragedy from becoming a travesty."
Prosecutors called Zimmerman a liar and portrayed him was a "wannabe cop" vigilante who had grown frustrated by break-ins in his neighborhood committed primarily by young black men. Zimmerman assumed Martin was up to no good and took the law into his own hands, prosecutors said.
State Attorney Angela Corey said after the verdict that she believed second-degree murder was the appropriate charge because Zimmerman's mindset "fit the bill of second-degree murder."
"We charged what we believed we could prove," Corey said.
A court public information officer said that members of the jury had no desire to speak to the media Saturday night. Identities of jury members are currently protected by a court anonymity order.
Supporters of Martin's family who had gathered outside the courthouse yelled out "No! No!" when the verdict was announced.
"Today, justice failed Trayvon Martin and his family," said Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the NAACP in a statement. "We call immediately for the Justice Department to conduct an investigation into the civil rights violations committed against Trayvon Martin. This case has re-energized the movement to end racial profiling in the United States."
"We are outraged and heartbroken over today’s verdict," said Benjamin Todd Jealous, President and CEO of the NAACP, in another statement. "We stand with Trayvon’s family and we are called to act. We will pursue civil rights charges with the Department of Justice, we will continue to fight for the removal of Stand Your Ground laws in every state, and we will not rest until racial profiling in all its forms is outlawed."
Around an hour after the verdict, Zimmerman's father tweeted: "Our whole family is relieved. Today... I'm proud to be an American. God Bless America! Thank you for your prayers!"

For those who actually followed the case knew Zimmerman was being framed and the verdict was completely justified.
Those who depended on the liberal media for information were shocked at the verdict.
Those who based this only on race, the Black race, are pissed off. But when you look at the mentality of these people, they are also Obama supporters and only support Obama because of his race. These people are idiots and I really don't care if they are pissed off. Maybe if they had a clue about life, then maybe their view would mean something to me.
Zimmerman had to beat a prejudiced judge, a prosecutor who was unethical and beat back the Black community who demanded this show trial.
So, in the end, it's too bad Martin died a thug, but a thug he was. Just as Zimmerman had choices, so did Martin and Martin made a choice to beat up Zimmerman and his choice cost him his life.
And for Obama, once again, he is made to look like an idiot- he tried to politicalize the case when he said: “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon,...” Yeah, and Martin was a bit like Obama, a pot smoker.
One hopes now that Zimmerman will be protected from the thugs who will want to do him harm. I wonder if Obama/Eric Holder will fight tooth and nail to ensure that Zimmerman's rights are now protected? Somehow, I doubt it.
Now, Dan. "Not guilty" doesn't necessarily equal "innocent." Bad blogger!
ReplyDeleteWhat is not in dispute: George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin. What is: was it justified? I'm in a group of people who are having a hard time understanding how being on the losing side of a brawl (where the instigator is losing) justifies shooting and killing the guy who has the upper hand.
Apparently, Trayvon Martin is guilty of his own murder.
I'm not sure how you arrived at the conclusion that Martin was a "thug," but since Zimmerman did not know him, and Martin was unarmed, his alleged "thuggishness" has ZERO to do with the chain of events.
I'd still like you to consider the possibility that Zimmerman was pursuing this kid, the kid was freaked out, and STOOD HIS GROUND. It's more plausible to me, than that Martin just attacked GZ for no reason other than it would be fun.
It is certainly true that people on both sides (and it's FREAKY that this boils down to right vs. left) have an imagined sequence of events in their head. But the truth is, only GZ knows the truth of this chain of events. The difference between you and me, is that I don't believe his story, and you do. The verdict went your way, but I can't imagine feeling victorious, even so.
And wait, Dan. . .you've never smoked pot? Really? I was a "good kid," and even I smoked pot. Not a lot, but some.
