On August 1st, just like any first of the month, the circus comes to Wal-Mart and other grocery stores.
The first of every month is the time when many government social services make their payments to welfare, social security, food stamps VA and whoever else.
Having worked many 1st of the months, it really is quite shocking to see the people shop. It is a mad house, to say the least. Long lines, rude people, people take an item off the shelf and if they decide they don't want it, put it where ever they want. On the first of the month, we usually have 15 grocery carts full of go-backs (items not paid for, items put where ever, items not approved for purchase by the government etc..) in an 8 hour shift. We also lose a several hundred dollars of merchandise due to theft, spoilage or breakage or other reasons.
Now, of course, Wal-Mart is grateful for their business and it is interesting watching the hordes of different types of people trying to shop.
However, if you don't need to shop on the 1st, you may want to wait a couple of days. Otherwise, bring along some popcorn and watch the spectacle.
