Henderson Alderman Canidate Ripping Off Taxpayers

Mike Mayberry is the former police chief of the Henderson, NV police department and he is a candidate for the 4th district alderman seat for the City of Henderson.
But something is not right. He is retired and collecting a pension. Not a problem. He is also on disability for a heart problem and is collecting disability pay.
From the LVRJ: Bateman and Mayberry have exchanged blows in a series of campaign mailers.
Earlier this week, Bateman renewed his attack on Mayberry, whom he accuses of collecting disability pay on top of his city pension, even though he's not disabled.
The new flier features pictures pilfered from Mayberry's own Facebook page that show him playing guitar and deep-sea fishing.
Bateman said his opponent still hasn't adequately explained why he is "collecting full disability while perfectly healthy and having the time of his life in retirement."
But Mayberry insists he has answered Bateman's claims. He retired as police chief because his doctors told him he would die at his desk if he continued in such a pressure-packed job. Serving on the City Council doesn't compare in terms of stress, he said.
"That son of a gun. I can't believe that he hacked my Facebook page," Mayberry said. "Since I retired, I've gone fishing two times.

No Chief, I expect you to take one or the other. If you are retired, then take your pension. If you are on disability, stop taking your pension. You shouldn't be able to take both and that is double dipping.
I am sure, Chief, you probably do have a disability with your heart and I really don't care if you go fishing or hunting or deep sea diving. but you shouldn't be taking the retirement pension.
And I am sorry Chief, being a police chief is not as pressured pack as being a cop that is on the streets. A police chief is basically a paper pusher and supervisor. They don't chase down criminals and they delegate supervisory positions to captains, lieutenants and sergeants. So, if your chief job could kill you, why wouldn't an alderman job where you have the public yelling at you no matter what position you have on an issue?
I'm sure Chief Mayberry would do a good job on the city council, as his opponent. Even though I live in Henderson, I don't live in the 4th ward, where this battle is taking place, so technically i don't have a dog in this race. But if I am paying for two pensions for 1 guy, it does effect me and the rest of the taxpayers of Henderson.
Time to give up 1 pension, chief.

Another Reason Not To Visit California

There are many reasons not to visit California- cost of the vacations, gas prices, liberals gone wild, pollution etc. Now, there is another one. The U.S. Supreme Court decided today to release around 46,000 inmates in the State prisons.
From The Los Angles Times: The 5-4 decision represents one of the largest prison release orders in U.S. history. The court majority says overcrowding has caused 'suffering and death.' In a sharp dissent, Justice Antonin Scalia warns 'terrible things are sure to happen.'
Justices upheld an order from a three-judge panel in California that called for releasing 38,000 to 46,000 prisoners. Since then, the state has transferred about 9,000 state inmates to county jails. As a result, the total prison population is now about 32,000 more than the capacity limit set by the panel.Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, speaking for the majority, said California's prisons had "fallen short of minimum constitutional requirements" because of overcrowding. As many as 200 prisoners may live in gymnasium, he said, and as many as 54 prisoners share a single toilet.Kennedy insisted that the state had no choice but to release more prisoners. Here is a possible solution: Nevada has empty prisons all over the State and I am sure we can rent some of the prisons to California to hold several thousand prisoners. We have empty prisons in Jean, Las Vegas and soon, in Carson City. We also have smaller prisons that California can use, for a small fee. It's perfectly legal to transfer prisoners out of state, so here is an opportunity for Nevada to help it's neighbor, California and make a little money on the side.

This Is Cool, Unless You Are Scared Of Heights

From Vegas Inc.:The developer of a 500-foot Ferris wheel and amusement park across from Mandalay Bay held a media event today to launch the project.
The Clark County Commission approved the Skyvue Las Vegas Super Wheel project in March, and today with various public officials in attendance, groundbreaking ceremonies celebrated the clearing of the 11-acre site at Las Vegas Boulevard and Mandalay Bay Road.
The Ferris wheel is being touted as the largest in the Western Hemisphere and third tallest in the world. The project is also planned to include 200,000 square feet of restaurants, retail and entertainment uses.

Nevada Energy and PUC Screw Nevadans

From the Las Vegas Sun: Southern Nevada energy rates will rise about 3.4 percent, or about $5.29 a month on the average residential home bill, to pay for energy efficiency programs and the lost sales related to those efforts for NV Energy, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada ruled today.
The rate increase was the result of legislation passed in 2009 that allow the company to recover costs of energy efficiency programs the company implements, such as subsidizing light bulbs and replacing old refrigerators and air conditioners, and the resulting energy sales it would have made without those programs.
The three-member Public Utilities Commission of Nevada unanimously approved the increase.
NV Energy had sought a 5 percent rate increase in Southern Nevada. In Northern and most of rural Nevada, it had sought a 2.5 percent increase.
Northern Nevadans will see a 1.6 percent increase, or an average residential monthly payment of $1.47. (The lesser amount is because Northern Nevada recently had a regularly scheduled rate increase and has different energy efficiency programs.)
John Owens, with NV Energy, said he did not believe the company would challenge the ruling.
The increase in rates will be effective on July 1, but will be partly offset for Southern Nevadans by falling natural gas prices and more efficient energy production, Owens said.
Most of the increase is used to pay for the cost of programs such as subsidizing light bulbs, he said.

So, we get to subsidize other people who buy energy efficient items. Why? The people who buy the energy efficient are going to get lower electric bills, so why do we need to subsidize them? Are they going to share their savings with us? Yeah, right.
What the article did not mention is that another reason Nevada Energy needs the extra money is that people are using less electricity, in combination with people moving out of the houses due to foreclosure and other reasons. So, Nevada Energy doesn't have to produce as much electricity, but we, the consumers, have to pay Nevada energy more because of this? How does this make sense?
So, now those of use who use electricity are going to have to pay more because people are conserving energy. What's wrong with this picture?

Tornado Update

Over 116 people have been killed and over 1100 injured by a tornado in Joplin, Missouri last night. From The Joplin Globe: Joplin officials are putting the fatality count from Sunday’s tornado at 116 as of this afternoon, but the death toll is still expected to climb. More than 1,000 people have been transported to area hospitals since the storm hit.

Listening to the Jasper County Sheriff's radio via the Internet, I heard reports that people were looting the Wal-Mart in Joplin, showing the desperation some people are going through.
People are helping out their neighbor and Joplin is getting all kind of supplies from all over the United States.
There continues to be tornado warnings throughout the country today, but it doesn't seem as bad as yesterday.

Here is a video of people who were in basement of a store or house along several other people when the tornado hit their building. It is mostly dark and you cannot see but the audio is scary.

Sandoval (And Taxpayers) 1 Democrats (And Tax Raisers) 0

From the Las Vegas Sun: In what may be a final acquiescence that they can’t get the Republican votes for a tax increase, joint money committees will begin the process tomorrow of cutting the funds Democrats had tried to add back to Gov. Brian Sandoval’s proposed no-new-taxes budget.
Although negotiations are still ongoing, two Democratic leaders confirmed they have all but given up on convincing Republicans to back either a services or margin tax. The most they now hope to get from Republicans are enough votes to extend the 2009 tax increase in exchange for reforms to collective bargaining, employee benefits and construction defects.
Both sides said the negotiations on that point are going well—at least on the Assembly side.

The Democrats and liberals thought that hey could just waltz in with their small majorities and belittle, make fun of, protest the GOP and it's legislators. They thought that Governor and the GOP legislators would just give in and allow taxes to go up in the State.
Well, the Democrats thought wrong and it is good news that the GOP held fast and rebuffed the protesters and the liberals.
Now, watch the Dem's go and try and raise taxes through the referendum process. If they do this I really don't care, let them try and see what happens.

Another Reason To Get Rid Pubic Employee Unions: Porn Surfing Teachers

From The Wisconsin State Journal: The Middleton-Cross Plains School Board has spent about $300,000 in the last year fighting a grievance filed on behalf of a teacher fired after an investigation found he viewed pornography at school.
Andrew Harris, a former seventh-grade science teacher at Glacier Creek Middle School, along with seven high school staff members and one administrator, were investigated and disciplined after the district discovered porn and other inappropriate adult content, including nudity and sexual jokes, in their email system during the fall of 2009...
Union leaders say the case isn’t about teachers viewing porn on a school computer — an action they agree is wrong. Rather, they argue the discipline for Harris and the others was unjust and not based on clear standards or objective criteria.
A union lawyer, Willie Haus, also alleges the district went after Harris because he was a union leader who had criticized the School Board.
Superintendent Don Johnson said district policy prohibits the “deliberate accessing or transmitting materials that are obscene, sexually explicit or child pornography.” It cited that language and other district policies regarding electronic communication when making its disciplinary decisions, he said.
Also at stake is the district’s still unsettled teachers’ contract, and both parties say those negotiations have been marred by the ongoing grievance case.

The first question is why didn't the school district have filters on their computers- for teachers and students.
But the union is just pathetic by asking that the teacher be reinstated. He, along with anyone else watching porn in school should have been fired, no questions asked.

Tornado Update 2

This post is a repeat of the other post because computer issues.
More tornadoes are on the way for the Midwest, from Northern Michigan, down through Central Wisconsin and all the way down to Missouri. Many of the tornadoes were confirmed, so this will be a serious outbreak.
Some of the tornadoes are in Amish Country in Wisconsin, so they may not even have a chance to be warned of the tornadoes that are around them. These are some of my old stomping grounds, in Wisconsin.

Update 2: In the Town of Saratoga, south of Wisconsin Rapids, a garage collapsed on a woman but she got out but is injured.
There is a tornado in Rome and Saratoga area and is still on the ground, heading east towards Portage County, Adams and Waushara County. There is a grass fire heading towards a a propane farm in Saratoga, on Evergreen Ave.There are numerous houses damaged or collapsed in the area.
All area fire departments are out and searching for victims.

In Wood County, WI., they are searching a camp ground for any victims. Apparently, a tornado went directly through the Deerfield campground, in Saratoga. They sent one patient via helicopter to the hospital, but not sure where the patient was from.

In Joplin, one of it's hospital's took a direct hit and apparently there have been fatalities. Two fire stations collasped in Joplin and firefighters were trapped in the debris.

Looks like Wisconsin may be done with the tornadoes but the damage from the tornadoes that hit will be felt for days, weeks and even months. Too bad that the local newspapers had nothing until the storms hit.
I talked to my mom who lives in Elm Grove and it seems like thye are just getting thunderstorms. Glad I live in Vegas where we have never had a tornado as far as I know of.
The Weather Channel is reporting that the tornado that struck Joplin is still on the ground.
They also they there are going to be more tornado outbreaks tomorrow, much like the tornadoes that hit the south a couple of weeks ago.

It really sucks that the newspaper in Central Wisconsin, including the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune and the Marshfield Herald have not one story on the severe damage caused by the tornadoes in their reading areas. I guess they have as much common sense that God gave a goose.

Free Tutition At UNLV And UNR?

With all the hoopla going on about the UNLV, UNR and other upper education budgets, I was tipped off that some people just aren't paying tuition. The people who get the free tuition are the people aged 62 and older.
This program allows seniors to take academic classes tuition free*, on a space available basis, during the fall and spring terms. Students can either take classes for credit and have the credits applied toward a degree, or can simply audit the classes for the enjoyment of observing and/or participating in the University classroom experience. *Other fees and charges still apply http://seniorprograms.unlv.edu/academic_62plus.html
All seniors in the State of Nevada can get free tuition, which is subsidized by the current students and by taxpayers. It is not based on need but on age. It also applies to all public colleges and universities in the State.
Hmm, maybe if the seniors can make a token payment based on need, ya think that maybe it will help pay the salaries of people like Dina Titus and the other professors who milk the system the higher education system?
Maybe, just maybe.

Nevada Students Need To Learn From Wisconsin Students

From the Las Vegas Sun: The student campers who briefly constructed “Sandoville” on the lawn of the Legislature came to Carson City last week looking for a fight.
Angry at Gov. Brian Sandoval for his unwavering insistence on cutting millions from the education system to avoid a tax increase, the students organized by liberal activist groups wanted to send a strong message.
Some came with the idea of stopping traffic on the main highway through Carson City or blocking the legislative parking garage.
Convinced that those measures would simply antagonize lawmakers and the public — and probably result in some arrests — the students ditched those plans.
Instead, they decided they’d do a sit-in at the governor’s office, refusing to leave until Sandoval met with them. But the governor was in Las Vegas on the afternoon they had planned the sit-in.
So, again, their civil disobedience plans were scrapped. That led them back to the Legislature, where they regrouped and plotted ways to provoke intransigent Republican lawmakers into having a conversation with them.
In the end, the 60 or so student protesters left Carson City — after weathering freezing temperatures, rain and snow in poorly equipped tents — without the aggressive confrontation they had sought.

Nevada has a serious budget problem, no one will dispute that. So what are the super nannies in Carson City doing in the Senate? Trying to pass a bill that will require store owners to post signs saying that cigarette smoking is bad for pregnant ladies is bad for their health.
From the Las Vegas Sun: On a 14-7 vote, the Senate has approved a bill to require businesses that sell cigarettes to post a sign about the dangers of smoking while pregnant. A business that fails to post the sign would be fined $100. State law already indicates a restaurant that sells liquor must post a sign about the dangers of drinking while pregnant. Assembly Bill 170 now returns to the Assembly for agreement on an amendment

The Pahrump Valley Times, which is a weekly or bi-weekly newspaper in Pahrump, NV has run a article on the homeless problem in Pahrump and Nye County.

However, for whatever reason, they decided to fake this picture to further their cause.

Las Vegas Sun: We Don't Know Nuthin' About State Government

The meth and crack addled mind of the writers of the Las Vegas Sun Editorial are at it again. Apparently, history, government and social studies classes were missed while the writers were out smoking crack or other illegal drugs.

Today, the Sun came out with a very stupid and strange editorial ripping Brian Sandoval for not bowing down to the Democrats in the legislature and let their education bill pass, even though there is no funding for the bills.

Brian Sandoval. Hey crack addicts, this is how government works. The legislature passes a law and the governor can veto that law and the legislatures can over ride the veto.

The governor’s stance could create a budget crisis, and Sandoval has tried to force lawmakers to agree to his plans. Dale Erquiaga, Sandoval’s senior adviser, said there wouldn’t be a special session called immediately if the Legislature hasn’t wrapped up business by June 6, saying it was the Legislature’s “responsibility” to complete the work, making it seem as if lawmakers are the problem. But it takes two to tango, and the governor has refused to engage in negotiations in any serious way.

Of course, the Democrats could see it Sandoval's way and stop the crisis and yes, some of the the lawmakers are the problem.

Unfortunately, Sandoval doesn’t seem to care. This really isn’t about budgets, it’s about policy. Republicans don’t want to waste the budget crisis to advance their agenda of gutting government.
Voters elected Sandoval to govern, and that requires considering what’s best for the state and working across the aisle to find solutions. If Sandoval doesn’t start governing soon, the consequences will be severe.

The people who voted for Sandoval knew what his stance was when the voted for him. They knew his positions and Sandoval was very forthcoming about his stances on taxes. The people who voted for Sandoval did not vote for him to capitulate to the Democrats or to play games.

So, to the crack and meth smoking editorial writers along with the king pusher, Brian "The Coward" Greenspun, they really need to go back to second grade and learn how government works.

Federal Government Says F-ck You To The Poor

If you are poor and in need of food in Wisconsin, the Federal government just gave you the middle finger all the while they are laughing at the poor and say "F--k you you sniveling little bastards".
The Feds are threatening to withhold money from the old food stamp program because the State of Wisconsin (under both a Dem and GOP governor) decided it might be wiser and cheaper to privatize part of the system.
From jsonline: FoodShare in Wisconsin has more than 800,000 participants and distributes more than $1 billion a year to help low-income residents buy food. The program is largely funded by the federal government but is currently administered by the state and counties, with counties largely doing the work of interviewing applicants to see if they qualify for FoodShare and state health programs such as BadgerCare Plus.
In one major exception to that intake system, however, the Enrollment Services Center begun during the administration of Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle handles enrollment statewide for childless adults seeking FoodShare or health care benefits. That center uses private contractor Hewlett-Packard.
According to the USDA, under federal rules only civil servants - public employees - can have direct contact with applicants for and participants in FoodShare. Contractors can do some other tasks such as data entry and document scanning.
Federal officials have raised concerns about the extensive use of contractors to run public benefits programs, pointing to past problems with privatization deals in other states such as Indiana and Texas.
In his letter, Holden said the federal government told Wisconsin officials in January 2010 not to expand their use of private contractors in the Enrollment Services Center offices in Madison and Milwaukee. But during an April visit to Wisconsin, federal officials found the state had increased the numbers of vendor staff and the scope of their work, with Holden writing that this put Wisconsin out of compliance with the January 2010 order.
Holden said the state had 30 days to come up with a plan to correct the problem. If the state doesn't embark on a plan with federal approval, the federal government will withhold future money and seek to be paid back for the cost of contractor salaries going back to January 2010, Holden said. The Feds apparently could not point out any problems with Wisconsin but they decided apparently, that public employees are the only one's capable of doing the intake. What a load of crap.

Hey Harry, Think There Is No Place To Cut The Federal Budget?

From Biggovernment.com via Dad 29: About six years ago, the Dollarhites wanted to teach their young teenage son responsibility and the value of the dollar. So they rescued a pair of rabbits — one male and one female — and those rabbits did what rabbits do; they reproduced. Before long, things were literally hopping on the three-acre homestead 30 miles south of Springfield, and Dollarvalue Rabbitry was launched as more of a hobby than a business.
“We’d sell ‘em for 10 or 15 dollars a piece,” John said during a phone interview Tuesday afternoon, comparing the venture to a kid running a lemonade stand. In addition, they set up a web site and posted a “Rabbits for Sale” sign in their front yard. Most customers, however, came via word of mouth....
By the year’s end, the Dollarhites had moved approximately 440 rabbits and grossed about $4,600 for a profit of approximately $200 — enough, John said, to provide the family “pocket money” to do things such as eat out at Red Lobster once in a while. That was better than the loss they experienced in 2008.
Then some unexpected matters began demanding their attention.
It’s an understatement to describe the Dollarhites as being “beyond surprised” when, in the fall of 2009, a female inspector from the U.S. Department of Agriculture showed up at the front door of the family home, wanting to do a “spot inspection” of their rabbitry. She said she had come across Dollarhite Rabbitry invoices while inspecting the petting zoo at Silver Dollar City.
“She did not tell us that we were in violation of any laws, rules, anything whatsoever,” John said, explaining that the inspector said she just wanted to see what type of operation they had. Having nothing to hide or any reason to fear they were doing anything wrong, the Dollarhites allowed the inspection to proceed.
John said he had to go to work at the family’s computer store, so Judy took the inspector to the back of their property where the rabbits were raised. There, the inspector began running the width of her finger across the cage and told the Dollarhites they would need to replace the cage, because it was a quarter-inch too small and, therefore, did not meet federal regulations.
Such a requirement came as a shock to the Dollarhites, because they had just invested in new cages to ensure the bunnies had a healthy amount of space to develop, John explained. Though raising dwarf breed varieties of rabbits which require less space, they had opted to purchase cages designed for “large breed rabbits” so the dwarfs would have plenty of room. All for naught....
Not only was the cage too small, according to the inspector, but she noted a small rust spot on a feeder and cited it as being out of compliance. When the Dollarhites told the inspector that rabbit urine causes the cages to rust and that they worked hard to keep the rabbits cages in top shape, she told them it didn’t matter. The rust spot would count as an infraction.
The inspector then asked how the cages were sanitized, John said, and Judy explained how she moved the bunnies to travel carriers and powerwashed the cages, using bleach when necessary. Afterward, she allowed the cages to dry in the sun before putting the bunnies back inside them.
The Dollarhites’ practice was much safer than that used by some breeders who used blow torches to burn hair and manure from the cages — a practice that can lead to rusting metal and produce toxic fumes from burning metal.
During the course of the spot inspection, John said, the inspector asked his wife if she and John would like to have their operation certified by USDA. Judy said she wasn’t sure and asked what certification would entail and if it would help them sell more rabbits. The inspector responded, telling her it would involve monthly inspections and was completely voluntary. The inspection ended with the inspector telling Judy that the Dollarhites rabbits looked healthy and well-cared for.
After the inspection, the Dollarhites didn’t hear from the USDA again until January 2010, John said, when he received a phone call from a Kansas City-based investigator from the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
“He called us and said, ‘I need to have a meeting with you and your wife,’” John recalled.
After explaining that he asked the investigator to come after the workday at the computer store had ended, John said he asked the investigator about the purpose of the meeting,
“He said, ‘Well, it’s because you’re selling rabbits and you’ve exceeded more than $500 dollars in a year,’” John said, “and I went, ‘Okay, what does that have to do with anything?’”
John said the investigator refused to discuss details over the phone and made it clear that rejecting his request for a meeting would be a costly error in judgment.
When Judy asked if they should have an attorney present, the investigator responded, saying, “Well, that might be a good thing.”
“At that point, we kind of set back, (wondering) what in the world is going on,” John said. Then he found an attorney....
She said, ‘Well, Mr. Dollarhite, I’ve got the report on my desk, and I’m just gonna tell you that, once I review it, it’s our intent to prosecute you to the maximum that we can’ and that ‘we will make an example out of you.”
When John once again tried to determine which law he and his wife had violated, he said the USDA lady replied, “We’ll forward you everything.”
“Ma’am, what law have we broken,” John said.
“Well, you sold more than $500 worth of rabbits in one calendar year,” she replied, according to John.
“Okay, what does that have to do with anything?” John countered.
The lady replied by saying there is a guideline which prohibits anyone from selling more than $500 worth of rabbits per year, John recalled, but she refused to cite any specific law and, instead, promised to send him the report containing details.
At that point, John said he called his attorney and was told not to worry about it, because he couldn’t find evidence of any law or regulation the Dollarhites had violated.
Soon after the meeting with the APHIS investigator and with the stress of the investigation hanging over their heads, John said he and his wife traded everything associated with the rabbit operation for other agricultural equipment....
Recently, the Dollarhites received a “Certified Mail Return Receipt” letter (dated April 19, 2011) from the USDA informing them that they had broken the law and must pay USDA a fine of $90,643. Their crime? Violating violating 9 C.F.R. § 2.1 (a) (1): Selling more than $500 worth of rabbits in a calendar year.
At this point, Dollarvalue Rabbitry is expected to produced a $90,643 certified check to cover the fine issued by the Department of Agriculture. The USDA was, however, kind enough to provide in the letter the web address for a website — www.pay.gov — where they could go to pay their fine by credit card by May 23, 2011. Now, that’s convenient!
Based on an average price per rabbit sold being $10.45, the fine comes out to more than $206 per rabbit. In addition, the letter contains the following statement:
APHIS laws and regulations provide for administrative and criminal penalties to enforce these regulatory requirements, including civil penalties of up to $10,000 for each of the violations documented in our investigation.
If the threat contained in the letter is to be believed, the family could be fined as much as $10,000 per rabbit beyond the first 50 bunnies that netted the family its first $500. R.I.P. Randy "Macho Man" Savage

Randy "Macho Man" Savage (Poffo) died today in a car accident.

Florida Highway Patrol told TMZ that Macho Man -- whose real name was Randall Mario Poffo -- went across a concrete media, through oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a tree. He was transpored to Largo Medical Center where he died.
Lynn, his wife, was also in the car, but she had minor injuries. Officials told TMZ that both people were wearing seatbelts and that alcohol was not a factor.
Macho Man was known for his prolific wrestling career and later became synonymous with Slim Jims for his "snap into a Slim Jim" ads. Friday afternoon on Twitter, "Slim Jim" was actually a worldwide trending topic, along with #ripmachoman. I've Lost A Lot Of Respect For Kareem

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, aka Lew Alcindor when I watched him in person, is complaining about his treatment by the Los Angles Lakers.

A day earlier, he voiced his complaints through a serious of tweets on his Twitter account. "I think in my tweets I said, 'What am I, chopped liver?' It's frustrating.

Another Democrat Not Qualifed To be A Judge

First, in wisconsin, Joanne Kloppenberg, a very bitter loser who lost the WI. Supreme Court by over 7000 votes and still claims she won is a person who will never deserve to sit in judgement of other people as a judge.
Today, another liberal Democrat was denied a seat on the 9th Circuit appellate court when the GOP filibustered appropriately.
When a person says this: "Paralleling the late Sen. Ted Kennedy's dress-down of failed Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork, Liu said at the judge's confirmation hearing that in Alito's America "police may shoot and kill an unarmed boy" and "the FBI may install a camera where you sleep," and he went on to say in that America "a black man may be sentenced by an all-white jury for killing a white man absent analysis showing discrimination."

So Much For An Election Free For All

From the LVRJ: A District Court judge on Thursday overruled a decision by Secretary of State Ross Miller to allow any qualified candidate to run in a Sept. 13 special election to fill a U.S. House vacancy in Nevada.
The judge enjoined the secretary of state from moving ahead and gave the political parties until June 30 to nominate their candidates.
The ruling from the bench favored the Republican Party, which wanted to avoid a free-for-all election that would have decreased the GOP's chances of holding on to the 2nd Congressional District seat.
Judge James Todd Russell said the two statutes governing special elections were confusing and contradictory. But taken together, he believes they call for the political parties to nominate candidates to put on the ballot.
"The secretary of state is picking and choosing" the portions of the law that back up his decision, the judge said.
"That doesn't make sense to the court."

Obama Acting Muslim Again

Once again, President Obama just wants to show the world that he really is a Muslim at heart and almost as anti-Semitic as Jimmy Carter..
Today, he threw Israel under the bus when he demanded that Israel go back to it's border prior to the 1967.

The break with longstanding U.S. policy appeared to immediately aggravate the Israelis, who want the borders of any future Palestinian state determined through negotiations.
In a statement released late Thursday, Netanyahu said such a withdrawal would jeopardize Israel's security and leave major West Bank settlements outside Israeli borders.
"Israel appreciates President Obama's commitment to peace," the statement said. "Israel believes that for peace to endure between Israelis and Palestinians, the viability of a Palestinian state cannot come at the expense of the viability of the one and only Jewish state. That is why Prime Minister Netanyahu expects to hear a reaffirmation from President Obama of U.S. commitments made to Israel in 2004. ... Among other things, those commitments relate to Israel not having to withdraw to the 1967 lines."
The U.S. had previously endorsed the concept of a Palestinian state, but not the demand for permanent pre-1967 borders, with mutually agreed land swaps. Classy: Las Vegas Art Gallery Showing Serial Murder's Art

Proving once again that the arts community has no sensibilities, a Las Vegas Art Gallery is showing off the paintings of John Wayne Gacy, a killer of about 33 young boys and men in the Chicago.
From CNN: A Las Vegas art coordinator's planned charity sale of serial killer John Wayne Gacy's paintings is under fire from the very crime victims group that is supposed to benefit from the proceeds.
The National Center for Victims of Crime is demanding that its name not be associated with the exhibit, entitled "Multiples: The Artwork of John Wayne Gacy," saying it did not agree to be a beneficiary of the sale.
In a written statement Thursday to CNN affiliate KTNV, the crime victims group said it sent a cease-and-desist letter to the gallery owner.
Since word spread that Gacy's work would be displayed at the Arts Factory beginning this month through September, the event has been surprisingly controversial in a city where very little surprises.

“Mexico is a safe place to visit,” Calderon said today at the Global Travel and Tourism Summit, which wrapped up at Aria.
Calderon said he wants Mexico to be one of the top five tourism destinations in the world by 2020. He gathered the country’s 32 state governors to sign an agreement designating 2011 as the “Year of Tourism.”

Strange Case In Oklahoma

Thursday afternoon, Oklahoma County District Judge Ray C. Elliott told the jury of eight women and four men that the trial will last “potentially all of next week.”
Jury selection wrapped up Thursday, the fourth day of the trial. Two alternates were chosen, both women.
The pharmacist, Jerome Jay Ersland, 59, is accused of going too far when he kept shooting an unarmed, unconscious robber inside Reliable Discount Pharmacy in southwest Oklahoma City about 5:45 p.m. May 19, 2009. His attorneys contend he was bravely defending himself and two female co-workers from a robber he still considered a threat.
Killed was Antwun “Speedy” Parker, 16, of Oklahoma City. An armed accomplice, Jevontai “Daddy O” Ingram, then 14, fled the pharmacy. If you watch the video, I don't blame the pharmacist for shooting the thug kid until he was dead because the thug kid was not playing around with a gun.
I understand that the concerns about the prosecution that he may have over shot the thug. But we don't know if the thug was trying to struggle to get the gun again or what really happened during the second shooting.
But if the guy feared for his life and the life of the other employees, then it's an easy case to decide.

CCFD Fires Firefighter For Sick Leave Abuse

From the LVRJ: A Clark County firefighter has been terminated for misusing sick leave.
Donald Munn, an 18-year veteran, was fired this week after officials determined he improperly used sick leave.
Thirteen other firefighters are under internal investigation and face punishments ranging from firing to demotion to forfeiture of sick leave, according to county officials, who said the penalties would be meted out in the coming weeks.

Holy Big Mac: Man Eats 25,000 Big Macs

A Fond Du Lac man is about to eat his 25,000 Big Mac today in a local McDonalds.

From jsonline: Don Gorske plans to eat his 25,000th Big Mac on the 39th anniversary of eating his first.
A special ceremony is planned at McDonald's in Fond du Lac Tuesday afternoon.
The 57-year-old Fond du Lac man said he ate nine on May 17, 1972 and has only missed nine days since then, for various reasons. He usually eats two a day.
He has kept most of the boxes or receipts or has made specific notes in calendars that he's kept.
Gorske said he probably has an obsessive-compulsive disorder but he doesn't consider it a problem.
He jokes that 25,000 is a milestone because people didn't think he'd live this long. But he said he recently saw a doctor who said he was in good health and his cholesterol was low.

R.I.P. Harmon Killebrew

Another athlete that I admired while growing up has passed away. Harmon Killebrew of the Minnesota Twins passed away earlier today from esophageal cancer.
From ESPN: Harmon Killebrew, the affable, big-swinging Hall of Famer whose tape-measure home runs made him the cornerstone of the Minnesota Twins and perhaps the most popular player in the team's 51-year history, died Tuesday after battling esophageal cancer. He was 74.
The Twins said Killebrew passed away peacefully at his home in Scottsdale, Ariz., with his wife, Nita, and their family at his side. He announced his diagnosis just six months ago, and last week Killebrew said he was settling in for the final days of his life after doctors deemed the "awful disease" incurable.
Killebrew is 11th on baseball's all-time home run list after an exceptional 22-year career. His eight seasons with 40 or more homers still is tied for second in league history to Babe Ruth. He was an All-Star at three positions: First base, third base and in the outfield.
"No individual has ever meant more to the Minnesota Twins organization and millions of fans across Twins territory than Harmon Killebrew," Twins president Dave St. Peter said. He said Killebrew's legacy "will be the class, dignity and humility he demonstrated each and every day as a Hall of Fame-quality husband, father, friend, teammate and man."

Why Not End Oil, Mining, Farming And Other Subsidies

Harry Reid, playing a political game of gotcha is proposing ending oil companies subsidies, worth about $2 billion over ten years.
From the Las Vegas Sun: After weeks of fuming, Senate Democrats are finally attempting to light a match under Republicans by holding a vote to end subsidies for oil and gas companies posting record profits.
It will take a political miracle for them to blow up the relationship between the petroleum industry and the government on the back of this bill. Republicans are opposed to raising the companies’ effective tax burden, which in some cases is higher than the official corporate rate. So are Democrats Mark Begich of Alaska and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana — who said last week that lawmakers from states that don’t produce energy shouldn’t push for what she called job-killing measures in the states that do.
The charge is being led from the top. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., along with Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., circulated a “Dear Colleague” letter, urging others in the Democratic caucus to support a legislative effort to end subsidies to oil and gas companies. That call turned into a bill last week, which comes to the Senate floor today.

If Harry was consistent and actually was serious about this, then Reid should try and get rid of all corporate welfare. Get rid of subsidies in farming, mining (which Harry loves to protect), automobile companies, banking, factories, green energy, high speed railroads etc.
But of course, demented Harry Reid won't do this, Harry is just playing politics and playing class warfare.
I think Harry has better things to do than play games.

Romney Raises $10 Million+ So What?

Mitt Rmoney (RomneyCare-MA) came to Las Vegas yesterday and raised $10 million+ in contributions and some people are going oooohh, look how good he is as a fund raiser.
Well, it really wasn't that impressive.
What religion is Romney? He is a Mormon.
What state is just north of Las Vegas, NV? Utah, home of the Mormons.
Which state is next in terms of Mormon population? Nevada. There are far more Mormon Temples in Las Vegas and Nevada than Catholic churches or any other religion's churches.
All Romney did was raise money in the areas that are strongest for him.
So, why is this impressive?

Well, well, well, Arnold(RINO-CA) is a papa again and the mom is not Maria Schriver.
From the Huffington Post: Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has acknowledged that he fathered a child with a member of his household staff, a revelation that apparently prompted wife Maria Shriver to leave the couple's home before they announced their separation last week.
Schwarzenegger and Shriver jointly announced May 9 that they were splitting up after 25 years of marriage. Yet, Shriver moved out of the family's Brentwood mansion earlier in the year after Schwarzenegger acknowledged the child is his, The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.
"After leaving the governor's office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago," Schwarzenegger told the Times in a statement that also was sent to The Associated Press early Tuesday. "I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.
"I ask that the media respect my wife and children through this extremely difficult time," the statement concluded. "While I deserve your attention and criticism, my family does not."

Stripper Gets Prison For Hurting Striper

In Reno, a stripper got 3 years in prison for hurting a person working a road striping machine and seriously disfiguring him. The stripper thug, whose drivers license had been revoked 7 times did heroin that day when she crashed into the striping machine.
From the RGJ: As co-workers furiously tried to scrape away the boiling, 400-degree plastic that caused horrific burns to a street striper and sealed his nose and mouth, the 21-year-old who crashed into the striping machine with her Toyota Scion drove to her nearby South Reno home and went to sleep.
Brittania Anderson-Vankrey, a Reno topless bar dancer, had been driving the night of the crash even though her driver's license already had been revoked seven times, authorities said.
Washoe District Judge Jerome Polaha sentenced Anderson-Vankrey to three years in prison Thursday and said she would be eligible for parole after serving one year. She also was ordered to pay about $161,000 in restitution after she pleaded guilty in January to reckless driving causing substantial injury, a felony.
Heriberto "Eddie" Rangel-Guillen, 33, and co-workers had been striping a crosswalk with reflective plastic when Anderson-Vankrey crashed into the striping machine, which hit him. A co-worker was able to jump out of the way, while the machine broke Rangel-Guillen's leg and the thermoplastic to coated his head.

I am sure this thug stripper thought that the law didn't apply to her and just decided to keep on driving, after being revoked 7 times. Why wasn't she in jail to begin with? Can we say "spoiled brat"?
She is lucky that she only gets one year. And the restitution of $161,000 is probably a couple of weekends work for a good stripper, so she really isn't getting punished to severely.
While she is may be sorry for what happened, she probably is more sorry she got caught.

I Think I Will Take Iran's Side On this One

From the Daily Mail: A punishment in which an Iranian man was to be blinded by having acid dropped into his eyes has been postponed after international condemnation.
Majid Movahedi was convicted and sentenced for pouring a bucket of acid over Ameneh Bahrami after she rejected his marriage proposals.
The attack left her blind and severely disfigured.
The court-ordered retribution was due to have been carried out yesterday in Tehran.
But it is understood the authorities in the Iranian capital decided to postpone the punishment, which is allowed under Sharia law if the victim requests it, because of national and international disquiet including concerns raised by the British Government.
Yesterday Ms Bahrami told Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based news service: ‘I was very happy that this was going to end today.
‘And yes, I was going to carry out the punishment myself, but I was afraid that I would get acid on my hands, so a doctor was going to do it. It’s been six years that I’ve been waiting. I've been watching the televised mayor of the City Las Vegas debate and I can only can come to 2 conclusions: Carolyn Goodman doesn't know what she is talking about and is a poor debater
And Chris Giunchigliani is a big fat liar and extremly liberal.

The Twenty Ton Elephant In The Classroom

Every one is skirting around the twenty ton elephant in the CCSD classroom. Teachers, administrators, school board and politicians.

The elephant in the room is the teacher's insurance company- Teacher's Health Trust which is run by the CCEA or the teacher's union.

When was the last time the school board and the CCSD administration put the health insurance for it's employees up for a bid?

As a teacher, I have no choice about which insurance I can have to take- it's the teacher union's health insurance.

Why not let other insurance companies come in and bid on the health insurance contract? Why not allow teachers to choose between different health insurance companies?

As a user of the Teacher's Trust health insurance, I find entirely lacking in quality, so giving competition to the teacher's health insurance company may improve health care for it's teachers.

All of this could save money for CCSD and of course, it will help the children.

On April 30, 1971, the Milwaukee Bucks won their first and only NBA championship. From NBAhoopsonline: Milwaukee took the 1970-71 NBA championship by playing phenomenal basketball. It all started when the Bucks made an off season move to trade Flynn Robinson and Charlie Paulk to the Cincinnati Royals in return for guard Oscar "The Big O" Robertson.
Although he was aging and entering his 11th NBA season, he still averaged 19.4 points, earning spots on the All-Star Team and the All-NBA Second Team. Lew Alcindor, now better recognized as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, threw down 31.7 points per game and was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player.
They started the playoffs by beating the San Francisco Warriors in a series they won four-games-to-one. Then they beat the Los Angeles Lakers before sweeping the Baltimore Bullets in the 1971 NBA Finals.
As for the roster of the Bucks that wonderful season, they were stacked with great players. Lew Alcindor, Oscar Robertson, Jon McGlocklin, Bob Dandridge, and Greg Smith rounded up their starting five. In reserve, they had Bob Boozer, Lucius Allen, and Dick Cunningham. I barely remember that season but I went to a couple of games with my dad and enjoyed the experience of cheering the Bucks on. I would listen to Eddie Doucette (Bango was his signature comment) on the radio.
Unfortunately, Milwaukee has not had a team to win a major league championship since then.

Clark County's Population Will Soon Rise

I have my crystal ball out and I see the population of Clark County rising by about 500 people.
From the LVRJ: Legislators voted to close the 140-year-old Nevada State Prison next April, giving workers an extra six months to find jobs.
Gov. Brian Sandoval had proposed to close the Carson City prison Oct. 31, a step to save $17.3 million over the next two years.
But a joint budget committee adopted an alternative plan Saturday to delay the closure in the hope that prison officials could find jobs for the 107 prison employees who would have been laid off by the governor's proposal. The delay in closure will reduce the savings by about $5 million.
Acting Corrections Director Greg Cox expressed hope that he could find jobs for almost all laid-off employees in Northern Nevada.
The vote to close the prison came during a joint meeting of the Assembly Ways and Means and Senate Finance committees. Moves to close the prison repeatedly were made during the last three years by Gov. Jim Gibbons, but blocked by legislators and the State Board of Prison Commissioners.
Under the approved plan, more than 500 inmates from the Nevada State Prison will be moved to the High Desert State Prison near Indian Springs, while about 200 more will be moved to other prisons. About 86 correctional officers will be transferred to these prisons, but the future job prospects of 107 employees remain uncertain.

This is a good thing. First, most inmates come from Las Vegas, so why not keep expenses down by cutting down on traveling from Vegas and Carson City.
Plus, this prison was a money pit by doing the upkeep. We have newer prisons in Clark County that are closed and will need less maintenance, so why keep throwing good money after bad.
