Why Straw Polls Don't Mean Much

Today in Iowa, Michelle Bachman won a straw poll with Ron Paul close behind.
Straw polls mean nothing- all it means is that some people have a good get out to vote system in a small area, which Bachman and Paul have. They can get their people out to vote. But seriously, does anybody really think Bachman or Paul will be nominated? First, the elite GOP king makers would never allow it and second, winning in Iowa is like winning Nevada- it means nothing except to the people who wins. Iowa is a small state that loves ethanol and farm subsidies. If you believe in that junk, ethanol and farm subsidies when crops are getting record prices then you will do good in Iowa. But if you don't like ethanol or farm subsidies, like most people, you're going to do bad.
So, whoopee dooo, Bachman won in Iowa, the liberals will go ape shit and no one else but Bachman will care.

  1. The Iowa Straw Poll means two things: 1. this candidate appeals to the hard-core primary voters, and 2. this candidate has significant infrastructure. So who does that mean?

Group #1 is comprised of conservatives, largely evangelical Christians (Michelle Bachman) and libertarians (Ron Paul).

Group #2 is comprised of Mitt Romney, who did not compete, and may well expand to include Rick Perry. The distant third place for Tim Pawlenty indicates that it does not include him, hence his withdrawal.

  2. You're probably right, but the people voted are probably the most vocal and most liberitarians/ conservatives. I don't think they represent the majority of the gOP, for better or worse.
