There has been a debate at our high school whether we are at the end of cursive writing.
It seems that cursive writing is not being taught in the elementary schools, at least in the Las Vegas area.
The reasoning:
Computers
Computer writing programs
It really is not needed
It takes time to teach it
Nevada proficiency exams don't require cursive writing, so there is no point in teaching cursive writing in Nevada.
Soon, it will join the ranks of using checks as a method of payment- rarely ever used.
What a shame that cursive writing will soon go the way of the Dodo bird.
I was amazed when I figured out that cursive is--though pretty--really just lazy writing. Every cursive letter is just a printed letter with the pen left to drag on the paper. So, it's really not that different in the scheme of things. I don't know why they don't teach it that way, showing how the flowing loops are just a way to not have to lift your pen. . .but they didn't.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think it's dumb to stop teaching it. Unless we're going to as a group stop using script in logos and signage and in other artistic places, cursive is still around. Are we going to have a generation of illiterates who can't read "Coca-Cola?"
