From the Marshfield Herald: Thousands of homeowners are being asked to leave their faucets running 24 hours a day to prevent water pipes and sewer lines from freezing.
Abbotsford, Greenwood and Medford officials are among central Wisconsin communities asking all water utility customers to run water 24 hours a day, seven days a week to prevent pipes from freezing.
Residents are asked to run one faucet anywhere in their home with a continuous stream of water about the size of a pencil until further notice.
Water bills will be adjusted based on historic usage as required by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, according to a news release issued Monday by the city of Abbotsford. During this period, Medford residents will be billed based on a six-month water/sewer use average, according to the city’s website. Greenwood customers also will receive an adjustment on their utility bills, according to the city’s website.
Extreme cold weather has caused frost depths greater than seven feet in paved areas and areas where snow has been removed. This is near the depth of water mains and sewer laterals, which could freeze if water is not run continuously. http://www.marshfieldnewsherald.com/article/20140217/MNH01/302170219/Abbotsford-Medford-residents-being-asked-run-water-continuously  I wonder how they are burying people in cemeteries, or maybe they are waiting for warmer weather in August.
