From the Havre (MT) Daily News: "U.S. Border Patrol agents charged 20 illegal aliens in three arrests in northern Montana in the last two weeks, including a couple accused of stealing more than $80,000 worth of camera equipment and transporting it on Amtrak’s Empire Builder. The aliens detained in Havre March 15 were two Polish citizens, found during an immigration check of Amtrak passengers in Havre. Camera equipment found in their possession was discovered to be reported stolen in Seattle. The equipment and the two suspects were taken to the Hill County Detention Center pending ext radi t ion to Washington. The Canadian border in the west is extremely porous. From North Dakota to Washington State, if a person wants to illegally cross the border, they can. There are few check points, few border patrol agents and fewer law enforcement officers. I predict the next big terrorism event in the U.S. will have ties to these areas.

Other than the Iraqi couple (who drove around the border checkpoint), the article did not state that the detained illegals (the Poles and Central Americans) came via Canada. Local law enforcement called on the Border Patrol for assistance because they were better equipped to deal with non-English speakers.
ReplyDeleteA large number of the illegal immigrants in this country (particularly those from Europe) come here legally on tourist or student visas and overstay. All of the 911 hijackers entered the U.S. legally. Yes, the Canadian border is very porous, and there is a potential for problems. However, it isn't significantly easier for terrorists to get into Canada than it is for them to get into this country.
