From the LVRJ: Despite his objections to the national health care reform law, Gov. Jim Gibbons joined Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto on Tuesday in agreeing to spend $279,119 in state money to set up a planning unit to prepare for 150,000 additional Medicaid recipients in 2014.
"I fundamentally disagree with the federal legislation that caused this need, but the law is the law," Gibbons said. But the governor warned at Tuesday's state Board of Examiners meeting that this is just the first in a series of bills Nevada taxpayers will be forced to pay for mandates approved by Congress and President Barack Obama.
According to one state official, the next bill will be an unknown amount to create or join a high-risk insurance pool for Nevadans who are unable to obtain insurance coverage.
Then as much as $38 million for computer upgrades to handle the additional work.
Then an unknown amount to hire workers to handle the significant expansion of the federal health care program for low-income people.
And then the big hit: an estimated $575 million in benefits for the first five years of the expansion starting in 2014.
The costs come at a bad time for state government, in the middle of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. http://www.lvrj.com/news/gibbons-allocates-funds-for-health-care-planning-90768299.html
Yep, hope and change. Thank you Harry Reid, for all this additional spending by the State of Nevada. Thank You Dina Titus and Shelly Berkley, thanks for screwing over the taxpayer. We shall remember in the fall.
