From the Las Vegas Sun: After complaining that a new water surcharge would sink them, Las
Vegas business owners got some relief last month when they were promised
credits for half the bill. But now, the region’s water utility chief
says rates could rise yet again — and the credits businesses were
promised could be reversed.
Pat Mulroy, general manager of the Southern Nevada Water Authority,
said Friday that all “rates and charges are back on the table” for
consideration by the agency’s Integrated Resource Planning Advisory
Committee. The 21-person committee was formed in May to help the
wholesale water supplier set policy on facilities, funding and other
issues.
Mulroy said water authority officials will revisit the newly added
surcharges and seek alternatives but predicted that no matter what is
decided, people will likely be upset.
“There’s going to be somebody who’s going to scream,” said Mulroy,
who made the comments during a panel discussion Friday at a real estate
conference presented by the Commercial Alliance Las Vegas at the Gold
Coast.
Mulroy said afterward the agency is carrying more than $3 billion in
debt and must keep at least $280 million of capital in reserves to
prevent its credit rating from “going in the toilet.” She said the
committee can recommend eliminating last month’s credit as long as the
agency maintains its reserves.
Much of the agency's debt is related to the $800 million third intake pipeline being built into Lake Mead.http://www.vegasinc.com/news/2012/sep/21/water-authority-could-reverse-bill-credits-promise/
The Southern Nevada Water authority is probably the worst run and corrupt government agency in Nevada, not just now, but probably in the history in Nevada.
This agency bought up a whole lot of ranches and land in Northern Nevada so they could drill for water and then ship the water via a pipeline to Las Vegas. This is such a stupid idea that only Democrats, most of those on the board, would think of something so stupid.
Then they are building this intake pipe into Lake Mead costing hundred's of millions of dollars and climbing. They are tunneling underground in an effort to put the pipe in but has run into problems like flooding and an explosion that killed a worker. This plan is so stupid that the project should have stopped the first time there was a flood, but nope, they just keep throwing money down the drain.
A couple of months ago, the SNVA jacked water rates sharply, causing some businesses to close their doors. How did they raise the rates? By water usage? Nope, they raised the rates based on the size of the feeder pipe to your house or business. You could use $10 of water but if you had a large feeder pipe, you were going to be charged $400 or more, in some cases. The business people complained and they were promised a rate decrease and a rebate of some of the money they paid.
But now, the incompetent Pat Mulroy is saying never mind- we were just kidding and the boobs on the water board are probably going to back her.
But then again, what do you expect when you have a bunch of Democrats running a agency? They just run it into the ground and then ask for more money and continue to do more damage.
