The Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak resigned today, granting the wish of the protesters in the street. The main stream media is praising this as an act of democracy and some even have the gall to say President Obama helped this coup.
First, Obama and his administration didn't do anything except be clueless, which most of us in the United States were, so Obama didn't do or say anything spectacular but he also didn't do anything bad as well. He just didn't do anything.
As far as this being a win for democracy like Eastern Europe in the 1980's, it's not, at least not yet. The military is in charge now and so the what the military says, they will enforce.
Further, these protests occurred basically in 3 large cities. We don't know what the rest of the country wants. Do they want a western democracy or Sharia law? Who knows because they have not spoken, so this could be a fight between the small cities and the large cities.
So, we don't know what will happen in Egypt and probably won't find out for a few more months. Meanwhile, the protesters will now have to deal with the military while Mubarek is kicking back at the pool with his pina colada laughing and saying have at it. See how how hard it is to govern.
