From the LVRJ: Illegal immigrants living in Nevada would be able to legally drive in
Nevada under a proposed bill by state Senate Majority leader Mo Denis.
The
primary reason behind the legislation is to make the roads safer while
boosting revenues by charging at least $25 per card, the Las Vegas
Democrat said at a press conference at the Latin Chamber of Commerce on
Tuesday.
Attorneys are in the midst of refining the wording in the
bill, but the bottom line is that the holders of the so-called driver
privilege card would have to take driving tests, pass driving tests,
and, like everyone else, purchase insurance - three things they can't do
in the absence of such a law, said Denis, a member of the Senate
Hispanic Caucus....
And so the controversial debate has begun over how to resolve the
daily dilemma of driving among the tens of thousands of immigrants who
are in the Silver State illegally.
It's a touchy subject because
many view such a card as a benefit - a privilege unduly given to
somebody who's currently breaking the law by virtue of living and
working in Nevada.
But Denis said many go ahead and break the law
anyway, which causes a whole host of problems, including throngs of
uninsured motorists out on the road.
He pointed out that the card
would not be a driver's license, nor would it be recognized as a form of
identity. Instead it only would give holders permission to drive in the
state for up to a year, at which time it would have to be renewed....
As it is in Utah - and looks to be in Nevada - applicants will have to
prove they've lived in Nevada for at least six months, and they must
have a tax identification number or Social Security number, said
Democratic state Sen. Ruben Kihuen, whose district 20 includes the
Strip, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and parts of east Las Vegas.
He also is a member of the Senate Hispanic Caucus. http://www.lvrj.com/news/republicans-split-over-proposed-driver-privilege-bill-182113041.html
First, I would oppose giving any type of license or government issued ID to anyone who crossed over the border illegally or overstayed their visa or otherwise committed a crime to get into the United States. They are not moral people, they are lawbreakers and we shouldn't give them any kind of benefit.
As far as the kids who were brought over by their law breaking parents, I suppose they could get some kind of identification but it would have to look completely different than the current state ID and driver's license we have here in Nevada.
And to say this will make the roads safer is total bull crap. If they are not buying insurance now, what makes you think they will buy insurance later, if they can get insurance at all?
And you think that all these illegals are all of a sudden going to go to car dealerships and buy cars? Whoever thinks that is smoking crack. First, if they can come up with the money, the illegals will go to the dealerships now. Second, the culture of the illegals is to buy used cars from friends, family and other private sales.
And how will the State verify social security numbers or tax id numbers? Take the illegal's word for it?
This is a stupid law, will have bad consequences and set bad examples.

This really pisses me off!
ReplyDeleteI'm currently teaching my neice to drive (40 hrs daytime driving and 10 hrs at night) and trying to make sure she won't be a menace on the road. Now these political SOB's have the nerve to offer a no questions asked permit to drive for people who SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!
Plus, as un PC as it sounds these people don't drive well! The Latin culture tends to make road rules optional. How many US CITIZENS have been hurt or killed by these ILLEGALS over the years? Worse still they frequently pull a hit & run and there certainly is no insurance to compensate the people they've hurt.
One should prepare recall elections for supporters of this outrageous proposal! Preferably deport them to the country they prefer over our own.
