From the San Fran Chronicle: Hall of Fame receiver and former Raider and 49er Jerry Rice recently appeared
on ESPN’s “NFL Live” to back up his former teammate’s claim that former Raiders
head coach Bill Callahan played to lose Super Bowl XXXVII, when the Raiders were
blown out by Tampa Bay.
“For some reason — and I don’t know why — Bill Callahan did not like me,”
Rice said on the show. “In a way, maybe because he didn’t like the Raiders, he
decided, ‘Maybe we should sabotage this a little bit and let Jon Gruden go out
and win this one.’”
Rice also said that center Barrett Robbins went AWOL before the Super Bowl
because Callahan planned to pass instead of run in the Super Bowl.
That comment adds another layer to Brown’s statements
on Saturday. He said the Raiders were ready to pound the ball at the undersized
Buccaneers, but that Callahan changed his mind the Friday night before the game.
Blaming the loss on Callahan, or suggesting he sabotaged the game, is a
ridiculous notion to many including Pro
Football Talk.
However, if that was Callahan’s design or not, apparently that’s what key
members of his team thought. If that’s the case, then Callahan might as well
have sabotaged the game. Either way, it’s a colossal failure of leadership on
Callahan’s part. http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/2013/01/22/jerry-rice-backs-up-tim-browns-claim/
I don't know if this is sour grapes of players who lost a Super Bowl or if it is actually true.
If it is true, Callahan ought to be banned from the league. If Rice and Brown are lying or their charge can't be proved, maybe Rice could be kicked out of the Hall of Fame and Brown should never be allowed to be in the Hall of Fame.
Anyways, perhaps if the Raider quarterback didn't throw 2 pick 6 (interceptions run back for touchdowns) in the 4th quarter and had a total of 5 interceptions, if the defense would have done their job and no sacks, they may have a chance to win the game.
Sounds like a bunch of sour grapes from Rice and Brown and just a cheap attempt to get some publicity.
And to Jerry, there are a lot of reasons why people didn't like you.
